Magdalene van den Velde was born and raised on her Lord father's estate in the lovely country of Flanders. Growing up in a very large household run by scholarly parents enabled her to escape the scrutiny of her lady nurses and run amok with the local farmers and artisans in between her lessons. As a renaissance woman, she is learned in the ways of art, languages, music, mathematics and natural philosophy, in addition to more domestic tasks such as spinning, sewing, farming and fighting.

While visiting at her merchant uncle's townhouse in the rapidly expanding port city of Antwerp, she was disturbed one night by three sailors begging entry at her door, one of whom had been greviously wounded. Through diligent application of her healing skills, she was able to revive that sailor, one Captain Lot Ramirez. While he was recuperating, resting in secret in an unused stillroom, the two became fast friends. Knowing a good thing when he sees one, the captain spoke of adventures at sea, the beauty of distant lands, and the wealth of knowledge to be found in far-off countries, all the time trying to draw the young lady into his employ. Torn between responsibility to her family and the prospect of adventures she had only ever dreamed about, she confessed all to her guardians. Remarkably, her uncle was on excellent terms with the Familia di Cellini, and so Magdalene was granted permission to set sail on The White Star.

Currently Magdalene splits her time between land and sea, sailing out with The White Star every other voyage. The meantime she spends ministering to the tenants of the villa, making her way through the extensive library, and learning every new thing she can get her hands on. As household physic, she is always there to heal ailments using only the most pleasant of techniques.
