Marcos de la Cruz

Order of the Duellist
AoA

Device

Diego de la Cruz was the Spanish ambassador to the Italian city-states. While in the city of Ravenna he fell in love with the daughter of a successful merchant by the name of Maria Falco. Sadly, Diego was recalled to Spain and had to leave his love affair behind, however he left enough wealth to take care of Maria and their son Marcos. Marcos grew up with his mother enjoying his time on the docks watching the ships sail.
It was not long before he was old enough to begin sailing as a cabin boy, on a ship called the Ermine Griffin. The Captain took it upon himself to teach young Marcos the use of a gentleman’s weapon, the rapier. On one of his travels in the Mediterranean, his ship fell under attack by the pirate ship La Villa a Broka. Marcos managed to keep himself alive with a bit of good sword work and was made apart of the crew as a result. He sailed with the pirates of Dark Sail on La Villa a Broka for some time before he grew angry with the crew. At first Dark Sail seemed like a good band as they fought in the name of France and only attacked the enemies of France, however the pirates soon grew very greedy and began attacking innocent merchant vessels that were not enemies at all. At the first opportunity Marcos jumped ship and took a portion of the ill earned treasure with him.
Marcos spent a few years as a guard on a caravan to the Holy Land but grew tired of life in the dry desert so he decided to find a ship to take him back to Spain. It just so happened that the first ship available, traveling that route was the Good Ship White Star. Marcos had heard well of the White Star and of it’s captain, Lot Ramirez, and decided to buy passage. He soon was welcomed as a friend and fellow sailor on the ship, lending a hand where he could and assisting the crew in their many tasks.
The White Star stopped in Venice to rest for a while, visit family and friends, and sell some of their “goods” before continuing on to Marcos’ destination. Marcos and the ship’s navigator, Modechai, decided to investigate and see what this legendary city had to offer. They soon found that this city's nobles were a bloodthirsty lot, and played a deadly “game” where they would see who was the best duelist. The only catch was that dueling was illegal and the fighting had to be done without the knowledge of the local constabulary, which was supplied by a mercenary force. Marcos soon discovered that the real fight was with the town guards and not the other duelists. He then came up with a plot to capture and ransom the captain of the mercenary guards, whom, it was said, had returned to town. After a few drinks at the local tavern Marcos’ tongue became a bit loose and one of the listeners felt they could earn a bit of money by selling the plot to the captain. Not long after, Marcos was captured and brought before the captain only to find that the it was none other than Lot Ramirez who commanded the company. Marcos confessed his plotting and pleaded for his life. The good Captain Lot agreed to spare Marcos and take him as a prisoner, under his watchful eye. Marcos now serves as a powdermonkey on the White Star until “Such time as the captain sees fit to relieve him.” Marcos has found a bond with the crew and hopes to some day earn his freedom and be a full member of the ship.
