My
father and mother brought home a bulldog bitch, Dutchess, for my 5th birthday,
April of 1950. It was at this time I joined the B.B.B.B. Club; A
world-wide membership composed of people who would and usually do go to
any extreme to co-habitate with the bulldog. Once Bitten By the Bulldog
Bug, the infected victim , helplessly and unconsciously perceives the world
anew. i.e. The usual negative connotations associated with the words like
bully, wrinkles and snore take on positive meanings, if not near religious
enlightenment!!
The "Goomba" line of bulldogs culminated a life-long association with this incredibly loveable and addictive breed of dog. And so, it had to be, that in 1970 my husband, Blake and, I, Dianne, fell victim to the B.B.B.B. affliction and began a planned breeding program. Extensive research coupled with a "picture" of the bulldog Standard etched into our brains, fueled the all consuming desire to contribute to the preservation and betterment of the breed. The first find in our search for a foundation stock was a beautiful bitch out of Ch. Cherokee Morgan. We were living in Albuquerque, NM. at the time and the whole family, 3 boys and 2 girls (Ernie, Cliff, Nolan, Sabrina and Carina), fell in love with Benham's Dutchess Tosha Lee. Unfortunately, we lost our Tosha while pregnant with her first litter. We had to put our dreams of the Goombas' on hold for a few years. We spent the next 5 years in Arizona where we enjoyed the company of a wonderful German Shepard named Cookie. Finally the longing for bulldogs ended when my husband's job brought us to Pennsylvania in 1979. The search was rekindled by purchasing a two year old foundation stud. He was the son of Ch. Marinebull's All the Way (Goober). We were thrilled when Dr. Quebe of Louisiana sold us this magnificent red brindle stud with such fine conformation and gorgeous-correct head. No doubt he was worth the wait. We bought two bitches(sisters) out of Ch. Morton's Lonesome Leo line from Albuquerque, N.M. respectively, Benham's Miss Fancy Pants and Benham's Scooter Magooter. We bought our next bitch from Texas out of the Mapo line, Benham's Smashin' Saber Goomba. We went to Phoenix, Arizona for the Judanna line, our Benham's Cactus Canoli Goomba. As the program progressed we purchased our second stud, two years old, from Jeff and Joyce Lietzke of Lisbon, Ohio. This was Tawzi's B.A. Barracus, son of Fatty Arbuckle of Tawzi. Through carefully selected line breedings, we have made progress in accomplishing the original Goomba dream. They are all loved, handled and played with from day one. The joy of raising a bulldog litter is second to none. We have made so many wonderful friends through the years of bulldoggin' -- truly we have been blessed. Life is just more fun with a house full of these loving characters , we call bulldogs. I think the world would be a better place if everyone that loves animals could know the joy of loving and owning or perhaps I should say being loved and owned by a sweet sour-mug bulldog!! Two of our children are also bulldog breeders; Our oldest son Ernie L. Benham, Seneca S.C. and oldest daughter Sabrina D. Potts, Creekside, Pa. All twelve grandchildren have shown symptoms of the early B.B.B.B. affliction. -- So the odds are good that the Goomba line will be carried on long after Blake and I are rompin' with the Goombas' in heaven. |
