| The next day, while waiting in line to buy papes, Jack had noticed Race wasn't being himself. He was suspiciously quiet like he was hiding something but Jack could figure it out. "So Race, how was da track yesterday?" asked Jack "Same as always" Race replied with his head down. "Lost it all huh?" Jack said, squinting into the sun. Race looks at Jack and says, "Yeah you can say dat." then lights up his cigarette There was a pause, then Jack said, "So you goin today?" "Nah," said Race, "I think I'm gunna just hang around here for today." "Well me and Blink are goin to Tibb's later, wanna come?" Race just looked at Jack then Jack contunue, "We're meeting there around 1:00." |
| "Sure, I'll meet you there," Race replied, remembering he no longer had his watch. Jack didn't notice it was missing so Racetrack didn't bother to mention it. Race and Jack went their separate ways selling their papers. At 1:00 Racetrack, Kid Blink and Jack all met in front of Tibby's. They all walked in together but Jack and Race sat at a table and Blink went to go sit on a bench at the bar. "What's Blink doin, he ashamed to sit with us or something?" Race asked "Nope, there's this new girl workin here, he spotted her yesterday and decided he was gunna talk to her today. We're here for support, you know." Jack answered. Jack turned his chair around so his back was facing the bar and signaled Race to do the same. That was so the girl couldn't see their faces so she wouldn't suspect that they all were together. The girl appeared behind the bar and Blink tried to make conversation but he wasn't doing too good. Race was getting curious and wondered what she looked like, so Race peaked over his shoulder to get a glimpse then whipped his head back to face forward. She had brown hair and blue eyes, and was very skinny like the girl he ran into at the tracks. Then he thought about it again, it was the girl at the tracks! Race nudged Jack in the arm and whispered, "That's the girl, the one at the tracks!" Jack really confused whispered back, "What girl?" Race just then remembered he hadn't told anyone about her. He got up and started walking toward her, but right away she noticed him and ran toward the kitchen and out the back door. Race followed quickly with Blink and Jack behind him. Once again Race had trapped her in an ally way but this time there was no way she was getting past him. |
