The File Menu

...contains two Opens, a Reopen, two Imports, three Saves, an Export, Mark as Unchanged, New Instance, Close and Exit. Open Notebox and its complement Save work as you might expect, allowing one to open and save notebox (.nbx) files. Notebox files, as you again might expect, are specially formatted collections of text snippets (i.e., notes). A significant feature of the special formatting allows categorizing of notes; these categories are displayed in columnar, or spreadsheet, format. Open Exploded Notebox and its complement Save Exploded are for opening and saving, surprise, exploded noteboxes. The purpose of exploded noteboxes -- that's "exploded" as in "exploded diagram" -- is to allow (relatively) easy use of noteboxed information in conjunction with other programs. Exploded noteboxes consist of a small tag file (e.g. "fred.nbe") and a related folder (e.g. "fred"). The folder contains the same data that an .nbx file would, disintegrated into a simple hierarchy of folders and files. Each notebox category is represented by a folder; each note in a given category is stored as a plain text (.txt) or styled text (.rtf) file, as appropriate, accompanied if need be by an options (.opt) file containing some internal Notebox data related to that note. All the folders and files are given names based on their contents, so you should easily be able to use other programs to work with, and even change, your notes, although since I don't control how other programs work I can't make promises.

User beware: breaking noteboxes into folders and files in this way will cause disk storage space requirements to skyrocket.

Save As provides the option to save the current set of notes in your choice of four formats:

  1. as a Notebox,
  2. as one big semi-formatted textfile,
  3. as one big semi-formatted rich-text file, or
  4. as an exploded Notebox; see above.

Options 2 and 3 can create very large files -- too large to be imported into Notebox Disorganizer, in fact, which has a 65,535 character limit on its notes.

Reopen is for (relatively) easy reopening of whatever notebox file you were working with when you last exited Notebox Disorganizer. This menu item is dimmed under various obvious circumstances. (You can automate the process by going to Tools|Set Preferences and checking the "Auto Reopen Last Loaded" option.)

Import (Append) Notebox will allow you to concatenate noteboxes. The imported notes will be added to the right of the existing ones. (Some people may at this point be wondering about importing Notebox Disorganizer 1.0 files. To them I say: Not Right Now, But Ask And Ye Shall Receive.)

The Import Text Files function will allow you to load batches of plain text (.txt) and styled text (.rtf) files. You may have a reason to do this. The files are limited in size to 65,535 characters at most; larger files will not be imported, but you will at least find a note telling you which ones were skipped.

The Export Outbox function allows the saving of groups of notes as a new notebox, or one big semi-formatted textfile, or as one big semi-formatted rich-text file. (The Outbox is covered in more detail elsewhere.)

Mark As Unchanged -- well, there are various auto-save options in ND, and this will allow you to avoid their sweet attentions. You can probably think of a reason for wanting to do this.

Because the programmer has been unable to figure out a good way to have more than one notebox loaded at once, New Instance is a sloppy substitute for the capacity indicated. It saves the bother of double-clicking the ND icon again, I suppose.

Close is what you choose for a tabula rasa.

Exit will.
