The Halloween Mystery
By Gordon Mei (October 1998)

Once there was a girl named Bri who had a best friend named Anna. Every Halloween, they would go trick-or-treating together. They would use large bags and they would be filled with candy—or at least… it seemed that way. You see, every Halloween they would get loads of candy. I mean LOADS of candy. But every single time they were done and went home, Bri’s bag would be almost empty with no holes or rips in the bag. Bri was confused. Anna asked if Bri had held her bag close to her. Bri was sure that nobody got too close to her. But how could this have happened?

Well, it was Halloween again. All Bri could think of was candy. She loved candy, especially chocolate. Bri and Anna were going trick-or-treating together like every other year. But this time, they invited another friend…Tania! There was a reason why they invited Tania. She was good at solving mysteries. In fact, sometimes people would call her Detective Tania. Anyway, they were trick-or-treating that night all over town. It was pretty fun. Bri was a banana, Anna was a tuna can, and Tania was a carrot. After trick-or-treating, Bri, Anna, and Tania checked their bags and Bri had an empty bag as usual. Tania claimed that she figured it all out.

Bri, Anna, and Tania were trick-or-treating all over town, of course. But when they got to a certain section of the town, that’s when it happened. When the people were “dropping” candy into their bags, they were actually reaching in and taking candy from Bri’s bag. Anna and Tania were a little more careful so they didn’t have that problem. So from then on, they stopped going to that part of town and Bri enjoyed an entire bag of candy every Halloween afterwards.
