Pixie spent most of seven years of life locked up in her room. The creamy blue wallpaper was fading and peeling in every corner, and the walls were covered with a mass of photos of various people, of people riding white ponies, of a people licking lollipops, of people rolling in the lush green grass. Pixie's entire bedroom was a dull mix of white, dirty brown, and gray. But on three walls hung a splash of colors, the photos and pictures of people and animals that Pixie had collected one way or another. And because her room lay in the basement, she only had one small square window, about a foot by a foot, which was the only source of light in her room and her only window to the world. There wasn't much to see though, for it faced directly at a filthy dumpster aside broken wooden steps. Pixie was known to others merely as a quiet, stupid little girl who was absorbed in her vast collection of color photos and pictures. In the seven years of her life, no one had befriended her. Until...
Pixie woke up to another morning of cold, harsh, white winter. There was nothing to see outside but white. But it didn't matter. The window was too dirty and small for any sort of view whatsoever. Pixie turned to her colorful pictures on her wall. She glanced slowly across photos of boys with puppies, girls with kittens, a turtle on the grass, until she locked onto a picture of a little girl her own age in sky blue overalls with a white shirt underneath. She stared and stared. A tear began to flood her right eye.
"Why are you crying?" a gentle voice asked. Pixie immediately turned around, but nobody was there. She looked confusedly around her entire room, not seeing a single person in the room other than herself.
"Wh-h-o said that?" she said as she wiped the tears on her cheeks.
"I did." Pixie was still confused.
"Where?" she asked unsteadily.
"Over here. Right here."
"I don't see you."
"Turn your head left." Pixie did that.
"Where?"
"In here. In this photo." Much to Pixie's amazement, the girl in the photo was speaking...to Pixie.
