MRS WILDE
By Gordon Gribbin
In 1895, Oscar Wilde, now in jail, finds he has to auction off his personal possessions in order to pay his lawyers' fees. Constance Wilde, his wife, attends the auction to make sure all is done fairly and honestly. As his possessions leave the room, she reminisces about her marriage to Oscar.
The play is wistful and sad, but shot through with humour and insightful characterisation. `Mrs Wilde' won 18 prizes in four one act play festivals in 1995. The lead part, originally played by Donna Dowler, is a gift for any actress with concentration and narrative skills, There are other challenging and rewarding cameo parts as Oscar's mother, his friend, Robbie Ross, and the amazingly insensitive auctioneer's assistants.
Running time 40 mins.
