Wombat East is a small town in the Western District of Victoria or in rural NSW or wherever. The year is 1951 and the world is unaware that everything is about to change. Dotty Delaney is the postmistress and telephonist. She knows everybody's business. She is intrigued when she has to process a call from the local homestead which has been empty for years. Meanwhile she has been told she must retire from her job and the home that goes with it. Angie Doyle, a local lady who totally lacks the ladylike qualities Dotty believes go with the job, sees herself as the chief candidate to take over the position. Meanwhile we meet Ratarse, the town drunk and his drinking mates, the local scoutmistress and her troupe, and two escaped criminals. Mix them all together and you have a recipe for intrigue, comedy and romance. The music ranges from innocent to lush, with a drinking song in between. Suitable for amateur companies, the cast should be between 24 and 28. The music is scored for piano, bass and clarinet. First performed by ACE Theatre in 1999. |
