Individuality

One of the things that always struck me about Norman's books is the celebration of the human spirit. Goreans in the books are proud, loyal, strong, independent, revered for the things that make each a singularly unique individual.

And yet, online, these are the very people who are often shunned and exiled.... while the rest are encouraged to become like sheep... passively following the crowd, doing as they are told, intimidated by those who spout "the scrolls"... thinking somehow they must change who they are to become Gorean... turning their backs on friends in favor of the "sacred scrolls"... too bad, really.... in an effort to become "more Gorean" that so many just miss the mark. To me, being Gorean means being the best person you can be. Taking pride in the things that make you the unique individual you are, and celebrating those same things in the people around you. To do less, in my opinion..... to deny who you are in favor of what is written in the books is the very definition of role playing, is it not?

Now.... if that is the purpose, then I have a suggestion.... perhaps we should change the sign at the door.... You know, the one that reads "Be Gorean or Be Gone!"..... change it to "Be Gorean.....Leave your humanity at the door."

I wish you well,

D
