We are so different, she and I.
When tempers flare, mine is usually one of them. She, however, remains poised. Oh, she gets angry, she is just more adept at knowing when and how to express it. I envy her that. There is a quiet strength about her. While others swing like pendulums from one side to the other, she is resolute in her beliefs. While I am impulsive and reactive, she is calm and deliberate. I tend to voice my opinions quite vocally (even when not invited ), she chooses when or even if she will express her own. And yet, she has never once attempted to monitor my behavior. She recognizes that we are so very different and we will each react in our own way. When others would tell me to stop fighting, it was her voice that encouraged me to "act as you will..... let the swords of others set your limits."

And yet, in many ways we are very much alike. There are several from whom I seek advice or counsel. But when it is the truth I seek, I go to her. She does not tell me what she thinks I wish to hear. She tells me the truth whether she agrees with me or not. She knows that the respect we share will withstand any difference of opinion. She has comforted me in my pain, and on occasion, she has allowed me to share some of her burden. She has supported and sustained me in times of despair, and she has lent me her strength when I thought my own was lost.

We have traveled different paths in this journey. Mine has been filled with conflicts and fierce confrontations (some my own fault, some the fault of others) while hers, not without it's own hurdles, was a more quiet route. The deep mutual respect we share springs not from our similarities, but from the individual differences that make us who we are. We have shared moments of great joy, and supported each other through times of sadness.
She has given me the gift of her friendship, loyalty, her respect and love... but most of all, she inspires me to be a better person by her example.
