A Very Chokey Interview

Its good Shit - August 1999

Simon McLeish and Scott Bishop our undercover reporters were set the grueling task of interviewing the fellas at Choke, they asked the questions that they thought you may be asking and then some! Here are the results. Enjoy!

When was the band formed?

Lee: Originally the band was formed in 95' gigging with Downer and Infected. Brad: but nobody knew (or cared) if we even existed until we started gigging with Allegiance in mid 97'

How did the band form, how did you all meet?

Lee: Brad and Glenn were school bum chums, Brad met Gav through a mutual friend. Brad: Mmmmmmm! Mutual Choke Live

Who in the band writes the songs / music?

Lee: Most of the riffs and tunes come from Gav and Glenn with the lyrics usually by all of us, usually at packing time. Brad: Where would we be without Uncle Buck.

How do you find the local Perth Metal scene and the punters that go along to the gigs?

Lee: It has improved so much over the last couple of years, although the venues are becoming less available, most gigs these days draw a decent response, it's great to see.

Who are your musical influences / favourite bands?

Lee: Carcass, Fear Factory, Machine Head Brad: Anthrax, Living Colour, Type O Negative, Deftones, AC/DC, At the Gates, Kiss, Sepultura, Suicidal Tendancies, Pagan, The Dirty Whittler and Glenn has brought his own special touch to the band with influences as varied as Europe, Poison, Cinderella, Warrant, Tuff, Slaughter, London, Bon Jovi, Sherbert just to name a few.

Any favourite local Perth bands?

Lee: Heaps Brad: Pagan, Plague, The Dirty Whittler, Erebus, Enforce, Deathlahem but then there's bands like Kayjun and F.S.D and they really do suck.

Is there anything you think can be done to improve the local Metal scene?

Lee: More venue variety Brad: And more slack arsed so called metal heads getting off their arses and coming to more local gigs.

Normally Perth Metal bands have written their songs from a political or social point of view, eg. the late Infected, Allegiance and Kin, Choke's songs are more fun and humourous, was this intended from the get go or did it occur by accident while sitting around downing a couple of stubbies?

Lee: As you can probably tell, we don't take things too seriously. We're a bunch of perverted cunts some would say. We do love porn, yes very much so Leeroy

How do get the ideas for you songs (they're pretty weird but cool)?

Lee: Usually when we are rehersing we'll have a break and start talking and you would know by the lyrics roughly what we dribble on about, sometimes it's serious, very rarely though.

Who’s Mum’s cunt stinks (Sorry it had to be asked!)?

Brad: Oh! Can't you tell by the smell on our breath's, it's Gav's Mum for sure.

How was the initial reaction to Onabigwun, you first demo, it seemed to go down well here in Perth, but was their any contact from interstate or even overseas

Brad: There was a small reaction to it in the form of posting a few away but nothing huge, it sold well to punters at the gigs

Your first venture into CD land, Smokin' Tailpipe Action, there semmed to be a fair few people at the CD launch as well as recieving good local press and airplay on the radio (mainly RTR). How did you feel about the recording process?

Lee: It was great, we did it at Pinnacle Studios with Anthony Kitson, he pulled a great sound for us, we're all proud of how it came out. Brad: We especially were proud of Gav andhis ability to Rock when the rest of us just couldn't or wouldn't. He was truly an inspiration to one and all. Thanks Soul Glo!

What was the local press reation to the CD and did you get any overseas attention from it?

Lee: The local response was great yeah Brad: Once again we've had a bit of response from our overseas but as usual we shift most of our CDs at gigs. We're just starting to push it over east but the tour in March 2000 should help that side of things.

Has anyone reacted stupid or approached you about your music, any trouble from it?

Lee: Not that we are aware of Brad: But hey! if anyone does want to speak to us bring it on a bit of contoversary never hurt anyone.

How did you feel when you found out you had got the Fear Factory support slot?

Lee: I think all were fairly chubbied, I thought Brad was full of crap when he told me, it was a great bit of news. Brad: It was woodies at full salute when we got that news. We were all totally amped and to this day that whole experience remains so surreal for me and one of the best experiences any of us have had.

How was Fear Factory backstage (were they dickheads or were they good blokes) and did they comment on your set?

Lee: We only spoke with Christian and Burton mainly, they were really cool. I think they were having sound problems, Dino wasn't the happiest. We seen them sound checking which was cool and got to chat.

You played an absloute pearler of a set how did you think all the Fear Factory fans reacted to your music?

Lee: It seemed to go down well, we ad a fucking ball anyway Brad: Hey it made you guys take notice of us didn't it

You been known to do some covers including great renditions of Backstreets Back and United Forces (SOD), any plans to do any others?

Lee: Not at the moment, we're writing more although something stupid will pop up, it always does Brad: Our own songs take priority at the moment and as we aren't the most prolificof song writers we need all the time we can spare to write (Thanks Uncle Buck)

You have just recently completed a cover of an AC/DC song for an overseas compliation, could you tell us about it?

Lee: It's an AC/DC tribute album, in the Bon Scott era. its supposed to be released in Japan and America in early 2000, we covered "Dirty Deeds" it came out really well Brad: Most of us grew up on early AC/DC so Dirty Deeds was a pretty choice for us. As far as live goes it will probably become one of those 'guest singer' songs. Glenn

Do any of your songs come from presonal experience, such as Bow Wow Chow and Chocoholic?

Brad: Yeah! Glenn and Gav have this real fetish for laying nice piping hot dirt packs on each others chest on quite a regular basis. It's something the rest of us just have to turn a blind eye to due plain and simply to the charisma and rock god auroa these guys bring to our band

Is it true that the band is heading over to Melbourne, are you planning on doing a few shows there?

Lee: We're heading over east around April for about 4 weeks, I'm not sure where we are going exactly but we will cover most of the east coast finishing in Queensland I think. Brad: Correct Lee. Well done

All band members except Lee perform vocals. When will we see Lee do his first vocal performance? And are there plans for seperate solo albums (ala Spice Girls)?

Lee: No I leave all the rocking out to the 3 metalheads up the front, plus my vocals suck Brad: And Lee's severe lack of testicles does not permit him to hit those growling notes like the rest of us. We are trying to push Gav in that direction (of a solo album) because as you can probably tell Frizz Free is just oozing with a special talent that just shouldn't be wasted. Plus he's just so damned cheesey. No in all honesty Glenn has written about 6-7 songs of his own for a solo release. Doom/Gothic I believe, I haven't heard any of it though. Brad

Choke's live performances are full of 'shout outs' to friends, family and general abuse to others. At this point would you like to say some hellos to anyone in particular (or insults)?

Brad: To the Block, Please do not associate yourself with Choke just because you did backups on our AC/DC track. You've already picked up more chicks than us by doing this (1). No truly all of our friends suck and we don't really like them we just hang out with them so that they'll buy all of our products.

The vocals of Choke's songs are more audible in that you can hear alot of what you're singing (as opposed to a low death growl). Was this deliberately done to gross people out or for other reasons?

Lee: No its not deliberate, that's just the way its is Brad: We spent ages a couple of years ago looking for a real singer and no one really wanted to know us (mmm! funny that). So Gav (or Friz Free Soul Glo) as he is more widely known arose to the occasion and we've never looked back

Any Last words, anything you want to say to the people around the local scene?

Brad: Gav and Glenn think that you are all absolutely scrumptious whereas myself and Lee, well you don't really want to know what we think. OH! Fuckit. To all those poxy chain wearing, lame arse clone bands out there that say they don't give a fuck but put their image on a pedastal higher than anything...... We fisted your mum's last night and they loved it. You know who you are See you in the Pit P.S:- Glenn and Gav were on the other side of the nation when we did this, therefore could not stick up for themselves. But all this info is true so it doesn't matter anyway. See Ya!
