Another of the bands which laid the foundations of the current extreme metal scene in Australia, and another whose status probably far outweighs their actual achievements -- although these were quite significant for the time -- was Melbourne's Hobbs' Angel of Death. With their so-called "virgin metal"--to describe their 'untainted' metal style--the band began life as a solo project for Hobbs, with musicians being drawn from other Melbourne bands (Woolley was from Nothing Sacred) to make up the numbers and perform live, which happened rarely. The first album was recorded with the above line-up and with a style and image geared towards the European scene found release through German label Steamhammer long before it was available locally. After this the band virtually disappeared although Hobbs resurrected the name in the early 90s and recorded another album with a line up of himself, Bruno Canziani (drums), Dave Frew (bass) and Nick Maltezos (guitar), but didn't achieve quite the same level of success. Gresik has moved on to become one of the more prolific members of the Melbourne metal scene whose credits have since included Bestial Warlust, Destroyer 666 and his current solo project Long Voyage Back.
After a long period of self-imposed exile from the music scene, Hobbs reformed this band in 2002 with the line-up of Woolley, Canziani, Frew and Talie Helene (keyboards), although both Helene and Woolley have since left the fold. Modern Invasion released a compilation of the band's two early demos in mid-2003. Hobbs Angel of Death played at Metal for the Brain in December 2003.
