Crushingly brutal modern death metal band from Sydney whose latter day sound was strongly reminiscent of Meshuggah, Mortality originated around the core of Maloney, Ford and Darren Jenkins (guitar) in the early 1990s as a Pantera-styled five piece unit until the line-up settled down as a quartet with Rick Fuda on drums. A national tour and supports with the likes of Sepultura along with a string of successful demos raised Mortality's profile Australia-wide. Upheavals occurred in 1994 with the removal first of Fuda, then of Jenkins, who joined Cryogenic in 1996, but the band's popularity was maintained. At the same time Mortality's musical direction became more groove death oriented. The long-awaited and much anticipated Structure finally appeared in the beginning of 1997 and proved to be one of the best local metal albums of the decade. Six months later however, the band split up due to musical differences between Maloney and the rest of the band. Maloney joined Cryogenic and the rest formed Porn Caddy, a short-lived rap/metal fusion unit. Pell went on to drum and later sing for You Blabbed About Mars, but by the middle of 2002 he and Figl were members of Three Point Tilt. Ford is now a member of Many Machines on Nine.
