In Shakespeare's comedy, two honest but fun-loving housewives play a trick on Falstaff, the blustering knight who thinks he's fooling his way into their purses and their beds. Against a backdrop of games and play, good-natured trickery in the spirit of community and true love wins out against self-centered deceit in the name of jealousy and gain. As Master Ford goes to elaborate lengths to prove his wife's treachery, as two young lovers plot to escape from two unwanted marriages, and as a pair of outsiders mock their way into acceptance, Mistress Page and Mistress Ford take their revenge on Falstaff and prove that "wives may be merry, and yet honest too."
