IRON NEWS * 6/11/01
by Alison Boudreau

Hi Team! Welcome to our 8th newsletter... Enjoy! :)

***** Fundraising Achievements *****

We have raised over $248,975 in the last 8 months! Special Congratulations to Kristen Lahmeyer, John Heanue, and Brad Stokes, who have raised over $10,000 each! They are a great inspiration to us all. Our current goal is to complete our final fund raising deadline within the next few weeks (around 6/30) since our training calendars will become much more intense in July and August! We have just a little further to go to reach our final goal of $450,000. The continuous support that we received this year ie: donations, discounts from local merchants, our dedicated volunteers, family, friends, etc.) has been so overwhelming. We've been so fortunate in so many ways and want to thank everyone who has believed in us during our incredible journey.

***** News Flash *****

Gleevec (formerly known as "Glivec" as well as STI-571) was approved by the FDA for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in patients who have failed standard therapy! This drug is the fastest approved drug in FDA history. It is now being tested for use in treating other types of cancer as well. For more information on Gleevec, please go to http://www.cnn.com/2001/HEALTH/conditions/05/10/cancer.pill.approved/index.html

An interview that national media physician Dr. Dean Edell conducted with teammate and honoree (and Gleevec recipient) Louie Bonpua was aired during the 5p news on local ABC channels on the day of the drug's approval.

***** Kona Half Ironman 5/27 *****

Coach Kate Sweetman has qualified for the Hawaiian Ironman on Sat. 10/6! Kate placed 2nd in her age group, and the woman who came in 1st passed the Hawaiian slot over to Kate! Congratulations to our very own Queen K! Bob Carlin also had a great race (5:30), as well Mentor Craig McGinnis (5:43), Mentor Laura Winter (6:30 with 2 flat tires!), SAG Captain Stephanie Anderson (6:25) and Honoree Louie Bonpua(7:15)! Craig and Laura had such an amazing time they will be back next year! For more info check out: http://www.keauhoutriathlon.com/

***** Lake Berryessa Swim 6/2 *****

Our team had a great time at the 20th Annual Open Water Swim at Lake Berryessa (hosted by Davis Aquatic Masters)! Everyone on the team did a 2-mile loop around the lake -- some in westuits, some without. The swim circled two islands, Goat and Flamingo, near the Oak Shores campground. With water temperatures reaching into the low 70s, it's no wonder why this Napa event draws such a big crowd. After the race our team ate, changed and hopped onto our bikes for a gorgeous (but challenging) 82-mile ride. Many kudos to Mentor Craig McGinnis for manning the BBQ that night! The next day Coach Kate led the team on the newly infamous "go 'til you see a rope swing" 14 mile run!

***** Escape From Alcatraz 6/10 *****

Our team raced and volunteered at water stops during this infamous race! Some of us even joined with TNT Runners and raised funds at a beer booth located in the "Rock'n Fitness Festival" celebration area. The event began with 1000 triathetes plunging off a ferry boat (all within 6 minutes) into 55 degrees of choppy waters between the SF Piers and the famous Alcatraz Island. The race consists of a 1.5 mile swim, 18 mile bike and 8 mile run. The first few pros completed the course in less than 2.5 hrs, while other participants continued to cross the finish line throughout the afternoon. The race will be televised nationally as a 1-hr. syndicated special on NBC, Sunday 6/24 @ 11a (PST). A $30 video will also be available.

***** Spin-For-A-Cure Rides *****

John Auer and Todd Weisgraber road their bike trainers in 90+ heat for 100 miles (5.5 hrs) on 5/19 in Los Altos. PR Captain Alison Boudreau cheered them on and encouraged folks to make donations. Special thanks to teammates who biked over to say hi: Mel & Joe Warlow, Kory Mingus, John Heanue, Craig Farless, Kristin Lahmeyer, Mary Posey & son Brian. Update.. The IronLove Spin-For-A-Cure mentioned in May newsletter got in their local paper and raised $1200. Congratulations Mel & Joe! http://www.saratoganews.com/sampler-0122.html

Record Broken... On 5/29 Rob Sturm (33) of SF made a new world record on the stationary bike! Rob broke the old record of 42 hrs by riding 45 hrs (551.8 miles) to help raise funds for the Special Olympics.

***** Silicon Valley Kid's Triathlon (6/3) *****

Honoree Captain Melanie Warlow's 12 year old daughter (Michelle Scates) just completed her 1st Tri! Michelle has cheered for her mom at many races and now it was her mom's turn to hold the camera! She was cheered on by her family as will as IronTeamates Kory Mingus, Todd Weisgraber & Alison Boudreau. The 2nd Annual Silicon Valley Kid's Tri was held at West Valley College in Saratoga. Kids 8 and under participated in a "short course" of a 25 yards swim, 1 mike bike and .25 mile run. Kids 9-12 years old completed 100 yards swim, 3 mile bike and .5 mile run (Michelle did a great job with 26:15!) The 13-14 years olds did a "long course" of 200 yards swim, 4.5 mile bike and 1 mile run.

There was much celebration when kids crossed the finish with cheers, huge balloons, and impressive medals were given out! When Michelle was asked about her medal after she got it she said, "it's so heavy it hurts my neck". She also mentioned to her IronMom, "that was much more fun than I thought it would be!". Michelle is still beaming from her 1st tri and she plans to participate in the 2002 Wildflower Mtn. Bike Sprint Distance race (.25 mile swim, 10 mile bike, 2 mile run). Way to go Michelle!
