TUESDAY May 1, 2001
Hi there!
So we're coming up on Wildflower weekend (Race day is May 5)! It
has been a very demanding several weeks leading up to this one,
so unfortunately no updates! Ah time...the first to be sacrificed!
But now we are in our taper before the race, a perfect time for
me to say HI! For those of you who ordered T-shirts, they will be
in the mail to you on Monday (after the race!)
I had my first race of the season at Millerton Lake in beautiful
Fresno California, OOOOOOOH! I chose the sprint distance over olympic
distance because it was so close to Wildflower. So, it was a 400
yard swim, a 12 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run. It was a great race.
There were about 150 people there total, about 60 in the sprint
distance. It was 39 degrees out. OUCH that's COOOLD!!! Especially
for us fragile Californians! Coming out of the water it was freezing!
I did the swim in 8 minutes and spent 2 minutes in transition to
the bike: off with the wet suit, cap and goggles, bike shoes on,
helmet on, unrack bike...GO! It isn't easy to dry out on the bike
when it's 39 degrees and cloudy out...so pedal pedal pedal, can't
feel my feet, pedal pedal pedal, oh well, not getting any better...
Small (by California standards) rolling hills out of the park (it's
a state park) with a nice climb up and sweet downhill to the turn
around, which was a guy standing in the road saying "turn around
here, turn around here".
Back the way we came...into transition: rack the bike, off with
the helmet, off with the bike shoes, on with the running shoes and
race belt...off I go onto the run. Still not dry, can't feel my
feet yet. The run is 2/3 single track trail (only wide enough for
one person at a time to run down it) and 1/3 road. This was a great
trail run, huge uphills and very technical downhills, with rocks
and branches and debris! My favorite!!
Then back on the road to home. I was the 8th place woman with a
time of 1:18.
8 minutes on the swim
Transition 1:2 minutes
36 minutes on the bike
Transition 2:2 minutes
30 minutes on the run
I had friends in this race, which made it a great
day! Last week was our last hard week before tapering, I ended the
week with a push, 3000 yards in the pool on Friday, 37 hilly miles
on the bike on Saturday, and about 8 hilly miles in Tilden park
on Sunday.
Think I'm ready? We'll see this Saturday!!!
I have 90 easy minutes on the bike tonight, followed by a light
track workout tomorrow. Then it's down to the lake Thursday. I'll
do an easy swim in the lake and a 40 minute or so run. Friday will
be an easy 20-30 minute bike ride prepping for Saturday morning,
when I'll be up at about 4:30am getting ready to race. More to come
Monday! Wish me luck! Stephanie
Go
