Individual style within a group catches on and becomes a group style, it is copied by others and becomes a movement, buisness catches on and markets it into a package and it becomes a trend, but only if people are listening and in agreement. Lolita has hit a chord with a segment of the youth in Japan. The romantic notions the fantasy the un-real reality, it's a common denominator for the trends in J-youth culture. Lolita seems to be a mutation of Cosplay,( a number of web Lolita are also Cosplay) Lolita with all the elaborate baroque entrapments of Anime, except without as in Cosplay a firm charactor to role-play. The "tea party" is a huge theme. The music tends towards Visual Rock which takes it's ques from American-Goth and Heavy-Metal. This sub-culture is pretty new on the scene (well not that new, it's a year old now and a year is a long time for Japanese pop culture) and it will be interesting to see where Lolita goes in the next year or two.
