DEATH IN THE DRAFT

A “Driver 27” Mystery

by Alan J. Porter

On the high banks of the super speedway, danger is a way of life and the specter of death is an ever constant companion.  But no one expects it to arrive in the form of MURDER.

When stock car racing’s top star dies unexpectedly at the season’s opening race it is seen as a tragic accident, a belief that the sport’s governing body is keen to reinforce.  But, Catherine West, the sport’s controversial Chief Medical Officer, believes that something far more sinister is responsible.

Her investigation leads her into conflict with racing’s power brokers, owners and drivers.  It will not only endanger her life but that of her husband, Jim West, a one time open-wheel racing star who is now struggling to establish a reputation in stock cars.

When a second driver is killed at the track, the sport’s governing body launches its own investigations.  When Jim and Catherine uncover a link between the two dead drivers, they realize they are looking for a murderer.

A murderer to be found embedded at the sport’s highest levels, a former racer with promise whose career was curtailed in a crippling crash, a man driven by jealousy and a determination to have revenge against the drivers he feels robbed him of his chance for fame, glory and wealth.

Jim and Cat West are now in a race to expose the killer and save the life of the sole remaining driver from that long ago incident – Jim’s new team mate.

The race for victory has become a race for life as Jim West must prevent another “Death in the Draft.”
