Hi folks –
Sorry about the lack of GWN last week. The trade show I attended last week in San Francisco was a lot busier than we expected. As a result I didn’t get the time to pull a full issue of GWN together.
As a result this week’s issue is packed full of news on the world of Batman comics, TV and Movies. So enjoy the news below and as always have a good week.

DK2 COVER CHANGE
--------------------------------
Recently fandom has been given a small peak into the first issue of "The Dark Knight Strikes Back" when DC Comics solicitations were posted featuring the cover art to issue #1 plus some sample pages from the book which were seen in Diamond's Previews catalog. This week the Comic Book Resources website reported that “the cover seen around the Internet will no longer be used in the final product, but in fact it's been changed.
DC Comics group editor Bob Schreck told CBR News Thursday that colorist Lynn Varley had changed the cover to issue #1 and decided to approach it from a new angle, giving it a more Germanic feel. Schreck explained that as Miller and Varley travel down the road of the creative process sometimes they choose to explore and go down a different road. The decision to change the cover was exactly that.
"Lynn rethought this," Schreck told CBR News. "While [the original image] was a valid way to go, we decided to go down this other road. We agreed and this [new image] will be on the cover."
For this new series Varley is exploring new territory. On previous projects her coloring has always been hand painted. With "The Dark Knight Strikes Back" Varley is coloring the series completely on the computer, a first for her. Varley is also very much a part of the storytelling, lending her own interpretation to the story and artistic process, as evidenced by the cover art change.
As with any project there are certain expectations any person has and for Schreck his expectations have all been met and then some.
"I expected to be completely bowled over and surprised, and that's what I got," said Schreck. "Seeing the pages come in and story beats we discussed realized...oh my God! Talking with Frank and hearing what he's thinking of doing and then seeing it put into play, then watching that metamorphosis and watching it become bigger and bigger, well it's been a whole series of happy surprises."
"This is Frank and Lynn returning to this character they know very, very well and applying those 15 years that have taken place in-between to where they are emotionally and artistically today. This isn't your Father's Dark Knight, this is Frank and Lynn approaching this with a fresh perspective. It's them now and 100% now. If anything, it's them a little bit in the future."
"You haven't seen this before," Schreck continued. "This is something that stands on its own and is not timid. It's bold and it doesn't sit their quietly. When you get done reading it you're going to remember you read it."
Look for "The Dark Knight Strikes Back" in stores December 5th.
BATGIRL: YEAR ONE ON THE WAY
-------------------------------------------------
When last month writer Chuck Dixon announced he would be joining CrossGen's staff in early 2002, he promised fans that he has DC projects he's currently working on or will complete before the move to Tampa that would appear, "deep into next year and beyond."
Newsrama reports that one of those in-progress projects is another collaboration between Dixon and his Robin: Year One writing partner Scott Beatty. Called Batgirl: Year One, the nine-issue, 32pp (22-page stories with heavier stock covers) limited series will be penciled by artist Marcos Martin (who drew the last issue of Robin: YO and the upcoming The Joker: Last Laugh #2) and is tentatively set for release sometime in 2002.
"This project has been in the works for some time now, but Chuck's impending move to CrossGen is still several months away and won't affect our timetable," explained co-writer Beatty. "Unfortunately, it looks like this will be one of our final collaborations for the foreseeable future. With that said, we're pulling out all the stops."
While Beatty said he and Dixon "laid the groundwork" for this story in the final pages of Robin: Year One, in terms of narrative, Batgirl: Year One is a bit different.
"Alfred was really the window into the previous story. This time, Babs is the seer," explained Beatty.
"We're tackling the 'Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl' in a radically different way. Barbara Gordon's origin hasn't benefited from any radical post-Crisis reboot to cast off the 'campier' aspects of her beginnings. She was, after all, created for the Batman TV series (inspired by previous 'Bat-Girl' Bette Kane) and then inserted into comics continuity. While we're keeping the fundamental bells and whistles intact, readers will see a much broader interpretation of why Babs ultimately decided to become a masked vigilante.
"Batman, we'll discover, certainly wasn't her first choice as a role model."

1977 ANIMATED BAT BACK ON AIR
---------------------------------------------------
The WB On Friday Mornings at 8:30 am is Airing The CBS 1977 Series THE NEW BATMAN ADVENTURES. The shows are originally running in original broadcast sequence.
Confirmed episodes so far include:
Episode 4, A sweet Joke on Gotham City
Episode 5, The Bermuda Rectangle.
Episode 6, Curses! Oiled Again with Catwoman and Clayface.
(Thanks to Chuck Gregory for the information).
NO JLA / JSA CROSS OVER
-------------------------------
It now appears that contrary to hints made during the presentation at the San Diego Comic Con the JSA won't be appearing on the Cartoon Network's upcoming Justice League animated series after all, but there will be another super team appearing.
The series' producers had hoped to do a JLA/JSA story in traditional DC Comics fashion.
"As for the JSA story, we ran into some issues with DC
over the use of those characters," producer Rich Fogel recently told The
Comics Continuum web-site. "The solution was to invent a new 'classic'
super-hero group. Although at first we were disappointed that we weren't
allowed to use the beloved JSA characters, it worked out well in the end.
"The new characters are more archetypes and actually a lot of fun. I just saw the storyboard, and this is going to be one of the weirdest, wildest episodes ever!"

BALE INTERESTED IN YEAR ONE
-------------------------------------------------
Comics2Film reports that Christian Bale (American Psycho) is a possible candidate to play Batman on the big screen.
With development on Batman: Year One proceeding under the guidance of director Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream), Moviehole.net has gone to the actor to see what he thinks about the prospect.
Bale reportedly told the site that he is "very interested in working with Aronofsky."
DVD UPDATES
----------------
Will 2002 be the year of the Bat? With a load of DVDs
supposedly on the way, it looks that way!
Earlier this year, Wizard Magazine announced that WB is infact planning
on releasing episodes of Batman: The Animated Series to DVD in 2002,
specifically spring. Similiar news has popped up around the net with similiar
news. But recently, a post on the official message boards of DC Comics
reveals that more DVDs may be coming:
"I'm the manager of a major video retail store and I love [B:TAS]. I
have seen several reports that Warner is doing DVD's for the series and the direct
to video movies as well. As you probably know WB is producing 4 new Batman
direct to video movies featuring team ups as we speak. World's Finest
and Subzero will get a DVD treatment soon. A spoksman for WB said
recently we will see DVD of the series eventually. We may have to wait for a
major media event such as a movie release, so don't hold your breath. "
With this latest announcement, it seems that there will be alot of Batman
related material hitting DVD soon. Here is the possible list:
· Batman: Special Edition (1989)
· Batman: The Animated Series episodes
· Batman: Sub-Zero
· Batman & Superman Movie: World's Finest
· Four Direct To Video Batman Movies
· Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker Uncut
(according to Dini)
(From World’s Finest News)
ON THE OTHER HAND …
----------------------------
The 16th Studio
Day event was recently held at Dave's Video in California where
industry bigwigs and DVD fans would get to meet and talk about upcoming
releases. Naturally, Batman: Special Edition and Batman: Animated
were two very popular subjects at the meet
DVD File covered the event and put up
in-depth information of the event available at their website. The full version
of the WB portion of the meet is available here (http://www.dvdfile.com/news/special_report/events/studio_day/2001/warner
).
Here an extract pertaining
to Batman releases
"Tim Burton fans may
have a long wait for those hoped-for Batman, Beetlejuice and Mars Attacks
special editions. While "under discussion" as always, pending
Burton's involvement, these are not even in production."
"[WB] is working on
a Looney Toons collection for release sometime in the future, though due
to the amount of work required it may not arrive in 2002. Other series that are
not planned at this time for DVD release but as always are "under
consideration" as always include Batman: The Animated Series."
WAL*MART PACKAGES BAT DVDS
---------------------------------------
World’s Finest News carried
a report this week that the Canadian branches of the mega chain store Wal-Mart
has begun to package DVD versions of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman
Beyond: The Movie, and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker together. The
Wal-Mart chains in Canada have been packaging animated Batman videos together
since the release of Sub-Zero. They originally packaged Batman VHSs together,
the most recent VHS package included copies of Mask of the Phantasm, Sub-Zero,
World's Finest, and Batman Beyond: The Movie together.
The wrap is just a sealed plastic over copies of the movies, with a sticker on
top. The three pack DVD retails for only $45 in Canada. It is unknown if
Wal-Mart chains in the U.S. are doing this, also.

IN THE STORES

DARK TOMORROW – GAME DELAY
----------------------------------------
Confirming the suspicions of many in the video game
industry, Kemco announced that Batman: Dark Tomorrow for the Nintendo Gamecube
has been delayed from launch to March of next year. The company, which also
made the game version of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, attributes the
delay to internal reorganization. "We had to work with DC Comics on
rewriting part of [the game's] script," said a company spokesman.
The company did finally reveal that the game would be a 3D side-scroller that
pits the Dark Knight against the Joker, though beyond that fact and the
gorgeous CGI sequence shown at this year's E3, absolutely nothing is currently
known about the actual gameplay.
VENGEANCE PREVIEW POSTED
-----------------------------------
IGN.com has posted an extensive preview of UBI
Soft's soon-to-be-released BATMAN: VENGEANCE for Playstation2 game console. It
includes a sample of the preproduction artwork, 3 Quicktime movie clips, and
over 2 dozen images. Just click on the link below:
http://ps2.ign.com/previews/16274.html
Pre-registration with IGN is required (it's free, but annoying) before you can
view the feature, but for those who'd rather not register but are still really
looking forward to the release of this game -- Batman fans can rest assured
that this game is high-quality. IGN's reviewer says, "The game promises to
visually please all kinds of gamers, and to perform like a full 3D
action-adventure in the classic sense of the genre." And the October 2001
issue of FHM
gives the game 4 stars and raves, "This action-adventure game combines the
distinct feel of the cartoon series with high-quality gameplay."
You can also preview the game (without being required to pre-register) at UBI
Soft's official site:
