         GOTHAM WEEKLY NEWS #169

         Friday October 26th 2001

*************************************************************

Hi folks –

Once again I have to apologize for the lack of GWN last week, the last couple of days in the week I were spent flying between the west and east coasts on job interviews.  The good news is that I’ve secured another job and from mid-November will once again be gainfully employed in the publishing software industry.

The new job is based in the Washington DC area, so I will once again be making the move back across the USA. I will let subscribers know when any contact information changes.

With two weeks of news there is a lot to catch up on, so enjoy the news and as always, have a good week.

NEW BAT WRITERS ANNOUNCED

-------------------------------------------------

Following Chuck Dixon's recently reported departure to CrossGen Comics, DC Comics has announced new writers for Robin, Nightwing, Batman: Gotham Knights and Birds of Prey.

"This is a really exciting time to work on the Dark Knight's adventures," said Bob Schreck, Batman group editor. "We're going from The Dark Knight Strikes Again mini-series to the 'Bruce Wayne: Murderer?' and 'Bruce Wayne: Fugitive' storylines, and now we've got a whole slew of new voices and new directions for some of DC's most intriguing characters."

The new writers are as follows:

ROBIN: Following the extra-sized 100th issue of Robin, which Chuck Dixon will co-write with new writer Jon Lewis, recipient of a Xeric Grant, (True Swamp, Ghost Ship), Lewis becomes the series' regular writer with #101 in April.

"Jon's got a unique voice, and he's going to be steering the Teen Wonder in some very interesting and exciting directions," said Robin editor Matt Idelson. "Bob Schreck suggested I take a look at True Swamp, and I liked what I saw enough to ask Jon if he wanted to take a stab at Robin."

NIGHTWING: Devin Grayson moves over to this title from Batman: Gotham Knights, beginning with Nightwing #71 in July.

"This is the assignment Devin's wanted for years," said Nightwing editor Michael Wright. "To say she's enthusiastic would be an understatement, and that enthusiasm is spilling over into everything she writes for the book."

BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS: Scott Beatty takes over, tentatively beginning with issue #32, in stores in August.

"Scott's really established himself as a writer who understands Batman and all the other characters that populate his world, which makes him the perfect choice for Gotham Knights" series editor Schreck said. "The name of the game in this book is teamwork, so it'll be interesting to see where Scott takes it."

BIRDS OF PREY: Strangers in Paradise creator Terry Moore takes over Birds of Prey with #47, reaching stores in September.

"We're delighted to have Terry Moore coming on board for Birds Of Prey. I've been into his work on Strangers in Paradise for years, as he's one of the best - maybe THE best - writer of female characters out there. What better book for him to take on?" said Lysa Hawkins, who takes over editing with the same issue.

DARK KNIGHT STRIKES BACK – SHIPPING PLANS

----------------------------------------------------------------------

DC Comics recently announced some of its plans surrounding The Dark Knights Strikes again, Frank Miller's follow to 1986's The Dark Knight Returns.

"Bob Schreck, the editor on the project, was kind enough to give me copies of the first two issues of the series to read," said Bob Wayne, DC's vice president - sales and marketing. "I'm now extremely confident that fans will be excited by it. In fact, they're going to be bowled over by just how good it is. I have every expectation that this enthusiasm will translate into phenomenal sales on each issue."

The first issue reaches stores on Dec. 5. Among the promotional plans are:

* Flash animation trailer at dccomics.com scheduled to be on the website in late November.

* Four-inch by 72-inch oversized posters scheduled to arrive in stores on November 7.

* Countertop display scheduled to arrive in stores on November 28

* "Now On Sale," window posters, measuring 10 inches by 13 inches, scheduled to arrive in stores on Nov. 28.

"The Dark Knight Strikes Again presents a tremendous opportunity for retailers to excite their regular customers and to attract new and even 'lapsed' comic book readers," said Matt Keller, manager - marketing services

DC Comics also announced  that the staggered shipment plan put in place for that The Dark Knight Strikes Again #1 will be implemented again for DK2 #2.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again #2 is scheduled to arrive in stores as follows:

Copies ordered on the FIRST order line will arrive 1/16

Copies ordered on the SECOND order line will arrive 1/23

Copies ordered on the THIRD order line will arrive 1/30

Copies ordered on the FOURTH order line will arrive 2/6

"We're confident that this innovative approach to ordering will enable stores to better anticipate the flow of consumer demand as word of mouth excitement about the series spread," says Bob Wayne, DC's VP - Sales & Marketing. "Of course, there will be additional copies of the issue available for reorder beyond the initial four ship weeks."

MORE ON THE 10 CENT ADVENTURE

-------------------------------------------------------

At Diamond's website, DC has released a little more information on the upcoming Batman: The 10-Cent Adventure, including a cover image, and a slight name change for the storyline following the special issue.

According to the report, The 10-Cent Adventure “follows a night in the life of Batman — a night that ends with a terrible finality. When Batman responds to a series of crimes, little does he know that a crime is occurring in the one place in the world he considers safe. The 10-Cent Adventure ends with an intense cliffhanger, springboarding into the "Bruce Wayne: Murderer?" storyline running through most of the Batman-related books this month and next [January and February].”

The issue will run 22 pages, and be in full color, and will retail for only 10 cents. The 10-Cent Adventure is written by Greg Rucka, with art by Rick Burchett and Klaus Janson, with a cover by Dave Johnson.

The copy for the special issue continues with, “In addition to the cliffhanger ending, this one-shot is an enjoyable stand-alone story that acts as a definitive primer on Batman: his origin, his motivation, his methods, even his hours of operation! With the talent, the content and the price, this issue is a great one for new readers to sink their teeth into the Batman mythos. It's without a doubt the one issue of the year that no one can afford to miss — and at only 10 cents, they won't have to!”

The issue is due in shops on January 2nd. And yes it is only 10c. So if you happily spend $2 on a comic, buy 20 copies and hand them out to friends and family. If you spend $3 – then buy 30. Personally I’m buying a stack for the kids to pass around at school and a stack to keep in my office.

Both Newsrama and The Comics Continuum recently reported a story in the Hollywood Reporter that Warner Brothers Television and Tollin/Robbins Productions are developing a pilot for Birds of Prey, the comic series starring Batman’s Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary, and a rotating lineup of other DC female characters.

The concept debuted with the 1996’s one-shot Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey by Chuck Dixon and Gary Frank. The team-ups continued through a series of specials and miniseries before a regular series was launched in 1999.

Accordintg to the Hollywood Reporter, Laeta (Tomb Raider) Kalogridis is attached to write the script, while the pilot will be executive produced by Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola.

JUSTICE GOES WIDESCREEN

----------------------------------------------

For its weekly showings, Justice League will run full screen on Mondays and Fridays but on Sundays it will be shown in letterbox format (1:85).

In other JL news it was announced that Kristopher Carter, who worked on Batman Beyond, is providing music for Justice League.

An unofficial “Preview Clip” compiled from scenes in the opening Justice League episode can be found at  http://www.comics2film.com/JLAToon.shtml

BATMAN WRITER WINS AWARD

----------------------------------------------

Batman Beyond co-producer, Alan Burnett, recently  won the Writers Guild of America Animation Writing Award. Alan Burnett is currently working on direct to video Batman features with Paul Dini. Congratulations to Alan on a well deserved award.

ANIMATED DVD UPDATE

-------------------------------------

It’s been extensively reported on the ToonZone news site that “during a recent chat with Warner Brother Home Entertainment representatives, much information was brought to the surface concerning Warner's plans for one of the studio's current licenses; Batman: The Animated Series. The show, which has gone under numerous incarnations on television, in theaters and on direct-to-video releases, has been good to the studio over the years and Warner is now getting plans underway for several DVD releases of the franchise during 2002.

First and foremost, the series itself, which ran under various titles from 1992-1999, is set to be released in the coming year. Warner is currently unsure whether the episodes will be released chronologically in box sets, or in "Best of Collections" which have become common among Warner releases. Warner claims it will undergo research to determine which will be most well received by consumers.”

Following this announcement , Animation On DVD (www.animationondvd.com) posted an on-line petition to get the episodes in season box sets rather than the “best of” sets. Personally this is how I’d like to see the series released. So if you want to join GWN in signing the petition then head on over to  the 'Batman Season Box Sets' Petition

MOVIE NEWS

************

BB:ROTJ – UNCUT DVD NEWS

----------------------------------------------

During the Warner Bros. DVD chat mentioned above the demand for an uncut version of Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker was raised. The WB representatives confirmed that the uncut version may be released soon. While talking to fans during an online chat at the Home Theater Forum website, reps for the studio said that Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker: Original Cut is in the Warner Bros. Family Group's release plans for 2002.

Rumors have begun to surface that the uncut Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker DVD will contain a widescreen ratio of 1.85:1. It is believed that as the movie was storyboarded in widescreen. The film was altered to full frame during the final phases of production. Altering the product back to a widescreen ratio would be easy, and not expensive.

For a full list of the cuts made see http://wf.toonzone.net/bbeyond/rotjcuts.html

The source also mentioned that DVD's featuring Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman/Superman Movie: World's Finest and Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero are also on the slate for next year.

The representatives also said that the studio is considering special edition DVD releases of Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns movies. However no timetable has been set for such a release.  The timing of these is said to be totally dependant on Tim Burton’s schedule.

ON STAR – IN THE MOVIE

-------------------------------------

The Batman / On*Star promotion has recently launched a series of print and TV ads for a sweepstakes competition – first prize  - A walk-on part in the next Batman movie.  (Whatever that may be.)

By completing a form on the OnStar website fans can win the grand prize which is the appearance in the film. First prize is one of 36 OnStar-equipped vehicles. Second prizes are a limited-edition Batman batarang and third prizes are a limited-edition mini Batmobile.

Unfortunately no specifics are given about what the "next" Batman movie may be.
