*************************************************************
Hi folks –
We’re a little late this
week following a family weekend away at Disneyland. We had a great time and it
was fun to spot the numerous Batman t-shirts amongst the crowds at the Magic
Kingdom.
There’s an awful lot to get
through this week, with excitement building for the premiere of the JUSTICE
LEAGUE show and a whole batch of new writer ready to take on the various Batman
comic titles.
As always, have a good week.
And to all our UK based readers, have a fun and safe Bonfire Night.

ROBIN’S NEW WRITER OUTLINES
PLANS
------------------------------------------------------------
The Newsarama web-site
caught up with Jon Lewis the new writer on ROBIN last week to ask exactly how a
creator who’s mostly traveled in indy/alternative circles wound up writing the
monthly adventures of DC’s Boy Wonder, and to give those anxious readers an
early look at this ideas for the character…
According to the creator,
the Robin gig came about due to his relationship with Batman group editor Bob
Schreck…a relationship that preceded Schreck’s joining DC. A fan of Lewis’
early self-published work, he and Lewis worked together a few projects during
Schreck’s tenures at Dark Horse and Oni Press. “Earlier this year, I was
working on a proposal for a Batman mini-series for Bob, and he sent me a bunch
of recent issues of Robin as well as Batman, in case I wanted to use both
characters. I think when I read the stack of Robins, something just clicked, I
saw how this character could be totally natural and fitting for the kind of
stories I'd been dreaming about all this time.”
Calling back Schreck back to
ask if he could propose a Robin mini-series instead as he liked the character a
lot more, Lewis learned Robin editor Matt Idelson was “auditioning” new writers
for the ongoing series in preparation for Dixon’s exit, and I thought,
"Man, this has to be fate."
“I worked like a fiend,
wrote up a bunch of material for Matt as an exhibit of the sort of stuff I'd
like to do with the book, and I guess he must of liked it.”
“This is my chance to tell
stories about people and cities and their magic, scenes from the here and now,
that I haven't been able to do before because my own art just wouldn't fit the
setting. I've been itching for years and years to tell the kind of stories Pete
Woods and I will be able to do in Robin. If I have to give a recipe for it, I
guess I'd say it'll be one part urban fantasy, one part creepy mystery, one
part everyday slice-of-life, and one part wallowing around in the thoughts and
feelings of the characters. My goal is that you won't note any clear dividing
lines between those four elements, either - a smooth blend. And of course
there'll be humor - I've gotta have that. I can't bear to write or read
anything that's without humor. Every person I've ever met has been funny, and
so has every day of my life, not always right away, mind you, but who was it
who said ‘Comedy equals Tragedy plus Time?’ Everything funny should be serious
and everything serious should be funny, as far as I'm concerned.”
Lewis said he was also
thrilled to hear artist Pete Woods was going to remains with the series
because, "I find his stuff totally sympathetic. His art has clarity and
space, it draws the eye right in instead of deflecting it with all kinds of
paranoid detailing, and he's very centered on the idea of visual storytelling,
as opposed to just drawing cool-looking page after cool-looking page. His
panels have a smooth, liquid kind of motion which I like much more than that
‘shattery’, angular, exploding style that completely took over for a lot of the
1990's. I'm a lucky duck to come onto a book with that guy drawing it.
Hopefully, my having drawn my own stuff all this time will give me an advantage
as a writer, in the sense that by now, I've probably internalized the processes
of the comics page. That is to say, while I write a script I'm thinking ‘in
comics’, not ‘in movie’ or ‘in novel’ or ‘in opera’.”
And while his first issue
(co-writing issue #100 with Dixon, with #101 being his first solo issue) won’t
be out until next spring, Lewis shared with Newsrama some early thoughts on his
ideas for the series and its cast…
“Tim's going to be spending
a lot more time immersed in Gotham City,” he said. “I want to explore Gotham as
the City of Cities, the ultimate in old, dense, layered American settlements.
But not in a gritty, cynical ‘noir’ kind of way. I want to show a city that's
as puzzling as a labyrinth, as full of relics as a magic cabinet, as interwoven
as a coral reef, as challenging to our preconceptions as any real city. Tim is
great for exploring such things because he's got a level perspective, he's
quite sane. That makes him a great barometer for the bizarre.
“At the same time, I want to
get to know these characters as thoroughly as possible and let them be
themselves. For me, the characters at the heart of the book are Tim, Stephanie,
Tim's dad and stepmom, then sort of peripherally, Dick and Alfred, and ‘behind
the curtain’ as it were, Bruce/Batman. I'm going to flesh them all out as
humanly as I can manage, because that's the thing that engages me most as a
writer - the challenge of really trying to imagine a human being.
“I love that Tim doesn't
have any superpowers, isn't ‘different’, doesn't have some overwhelming
obsessive-compulsive mission fueling him... he's just a smart, resourceful,
well-meaning kid who tries to fight evil, and he can only be defined by his
personality and his actions. He also doesn't have a huge, convoluted history as
a character, for which I'm grateful. His backstory is believable, on a human
scale, and not full of the sort of inconsistencies that come from decades of
being recreated, revised and schticked-out by dozens of different writers.
That's probably thanks to the fact that he's been written almost entirely by
one writer, Chuck Dixon.
“I guess I should say that
when you pick up my first issue, you're not going to get smacked in the face by
‘the new Robin!’ or my ‘controversial take’ on the character, or
anything like that. You'll recognize the characters completely, but the
difference will come about naturally as things proceed from there. My Robin and
Chuck's Robin will be totally different because we're two different writers
with different priorities and sensibilities and life experiences, and not
because I have some big gimmick to whip out. I like these characters, and I'm
gonna give them the best stories I can possibly write. That's my gimmick.”
SCOTT BEATTY TALKS GOTHAM KNIGHTS
---------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile new GOTHAM KNIGHTS
writer Scott Beatty spoke to the Comics Continuum.
"I'm very much looking
forward to exploring the possibilities with new Bat-Editor Lysa Hawkins and
penciler Roger Robinson," Beatty told The Continuum.
Beatty has worked in the
Bat-Universe before, teaming with Chuck Dixon on Robin: Year One and The Joker:
Last Laugh. The two are also working on a Batgirl: Year One mini-series for
next year. "I couldn't be happier than to have Batman: Gotham Knights
lined up as my next assignment at DC Comics," Beatty said. "After
making contributions to the Bat-Universe on a 'hit-and-run' basis for a few
years now, it's nice to settle down in Gotham City for what I hope is a lengthy
stay.
"And the 'team' focus
of GK affords me the opportunity to tell a variety of tales: Batman solo or
Batman and Robin or Robin and Nightwing...or the whole Bat-Squad. Gotham
Knights offers almost limitless permutations." Beatty is tentatively set
to take over with Batman: Gotham Knights #32.
MOORE TALKS BoP
--------------------------
Newsrama also spoke to Terry
Moore about his plans for Birds Of Prey. Best known for his self-published
Strangers in Paradise, Moore, who will pick up the reigns on Birds of Prey. His
first regular assignment for a “big” publisher, Moore has dallied with
superheroes and other similarly heroic characters before, but as the creator
puts it, “this is my first serious commitment.”
“I've actually been watching
Birds of Prey since its beginning,” Moore said. “When touring DC offices
several years back, Bob Kahan introduced me to Jordan Gorfinkel (Who was one of
the Batman editors at the time.) and recommended me for the title. I like the
strong female characters and the fact that the heroes aren't superhumans in
tights. It boggles the mind what you can do with these characters, and never
has their peculiar brand of services been more needed.”
And fans of Terry Moore’s
own titles need not be worried about the increase in Moore’s workload. “For me,
writing is easier to organize and accomplish than art,” Moore said. “It's
drawing comics that takes so much time, writing is more natural for me. I write
all the time, but I'll only draw if I have to. In fact, the only reason I draw
Strangers in Paradise at all is because nobody else would do it! Having
admitted that though, I will confess I'd like to do some of the BoP
covers....but they'd have to tell me I had to!”
GRAYSON TALKS NIGHTWING
--------------------------------------------
The one assignment that
has Bat fans already anticipating great things is Devin Grayson on Nightwing.
Ever since her entry into professional comics writing and her Nightwing
“Pulp Heroes” annual a few years back, Devin Grayson has never hidden the fact
that Dick Grayson/Nightwing is her favorite character in all of comics.
“It's true that Nightwing is
my favorite character in all of comicdom and, along with Batman, the reason I
ended up in this industry, but it's also true that the Bat-office is bursting
at the seams with talented creators who are just as fond of these characters as
I am,” Grayson told Newsrama. “Bat-editor Michael Wright had some really
difficult decisions to make -- I mean, honestly, how the heck do you replace
Chuck Dixon? I don't envy him that task at all -- and I really appreciate his
trust and confidence in me and look forward to working with him on what is
already a stellar series. Under the circumstances, I think the entire
Bat-editorial team made some fantastic, exciting choices, and I'm psyched to
see where the Bat-books go next.”
That said, Grayson admitted
she would miss her old haunt, Gotham Knights. “I'll particularly miss
the opportunity to work with the awesomely talented Roger Robinson, whose
collaborative genius and generous spirit I've really enjoyed over these past
two years,” Grayson said. “But I'm very happy for Scott Beatty and excited to
see where he takes the book and yes, of course, I'm thrilled to find myself in
Blüdhaven and can't wait to really move in!”
“I've actually had the
chance over my last four years in the Bat-office to explore a lot of the
stories I wanted to explore -- Nightwing the series gives me the chance to work
with the character long-term for a while and let the everyday excitement of his
life present new challenges and thrills and story opportunities for me and for
him. I'm going into this with great respect for what Chuck has created. Rather
than storming in to impose a lot of conflicting agendas on the characters, I'm
moving into this series with the desire to let the environment of this book
push me in new directions as a writer. I'd like to be a breath of fresh air,
but not a hurricane. After all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
“I was rereading editor
Scott Peterson's letter column for Nightwing #1 the other day and remembering
just how excited everyone was about this series when it first started up. It's
been so much fun over the years and I fully intend to keep the party going!”
DC PROMOTE 10c BOOK AS SALES
TOOL
----------------------------------------------
This week DC announced a
special program designed to help retailers who may plan to use the January
Batman Ten-Cent Adventure event as a means of mass promotion of their stores.
The publisher is rush
soliciting a “special, customized edition” of the 22- page comic by Greg Rucka,
Rick Burchett and Klaus Janson, which will serve as a lead-in to the next
Batman crossover storyline, Bruce Wayne: Murderer, and have a suggested
retail cover price of 10 cents. Available to retailers who place orders of
10,000 copies or more the book can be ordered with an customized ‘overcover’, a
3 inch flap on the left front cover which specific retailer information can be
printed.
DC recommended to retailers
that the information on the cover flap include something along the following
lines...
· Free Comic Book Courtesy of (store name or logo)
· Stop by Every Week for New Comics and More (call to action)
· Store address
· Store vicinity (i.e. “at the corner of Luthorville and Otisburg”)
· Store hours
· Store phone number
· Store fax number
· Store email and website address
· Special offer (a coupon of some kind)
The ‘overcover’ can also
feature a store logo graphic.
“We see this special offer
as a tremendous promotional opportunity for retailers,” said Bob Wayne, DC’s VP
- Sales & Marketing. “We want to thaankk Phil Boyle of Coliseum of Comics in
Kissimmee, FL, for making the suggestion that got this started.”
Boyle, is planning on buying
about 10,000 copies of the issue and then distributing them free by inserting
them in his local newspaper. "Nothing like putting a complete product in
the hands of the masses of uninitiated! I see this as the single best tool to
bring non-comic readers into stores in a looong time," he said.
The cover flap provided by
DC will allow Boyle and other retailers planning similar and other promotions
to do so without having to insert flyers with their store information into the
book themselves.
The other three sides of the
‘overcover’ flap will feature advertisements for DC Comics titles including the
Bruce Wayne: Murderer? storyline, JLA, and The Dark Knight Strikes Again.
This special edition is
scheduled to reach comic book stores on January 2, 2002, the same date as the
standard edition of the title. Interested retailers who want more information
can obtain it through their Diamond or DC rep.
MORRISON TO TAKE DOWN
BATMAN’S TIGHTS ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In talking to Grant
Morrison, Mark Millar, and Joe Quesada in the context of the war on terrorism
and the world after September 11th, The London Sunday Times examined the
role of superheroes in the aftermath of comics-book level violence entering the
real world.
The article explains that
while Morrison has already “dressed down” the X-Men, exchanging their
traditional spandex and action for more realistic attire and pacifism, he has
agreed to do the same for the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man. The article also added
that Morrison expects to do the same for BATMANand Superman.
Newsarama got in touch with
Morrison for some clarification on the points raised in the article,
particularly, that he would soon be the god of all comics, stripping characters
from their costumes forever, as a result of 9-11.
Morrison was quick to pull
fact from fictional liberty. "It’s typical journalistic enthusiasm getting
the better of the facts,” Morrison said. “I did a long piece about comics and
9/11, mentioning the fact that I’d already decided to eliminate the spandex
costumes, secret identities and ‘wrestling match’ type stories of the X-Men.
“This element of the whole
interview was the only one they chose to stress because it makes for an easy
headline – ‘Costumed Heroes to Hang Up Tights.’ I don’t really see this as a
trend of any kind..”

possibly other team up episodes as well. Batman/Superman have teamed up for the

Batgirl/Supergirl teamed up for Girls Nite Out. It is possible these will
appear as "bonus" episodes, similair to the Batman Beyond: The Movie

specs for the DVDs by the beginning of 2002 at the earliest.
