The 3rd annual "ALFRED AWARDS" were voted for by BATMAN fans on the internet between November and December 1999. The awards covered 20 categories and were limited to Batman comics issued with a 1999 cover date and Batman related toys and events from the past year.

 

The voting ballot was posted on the AOL Batman discussion groups, the CompuServe Comics forum, the Batman related USENET discussion groups, the GOTHAM WEEKLY NEWS newsletter and several Batman related websites.

 

The Alfreds are organized and administered by GOTHAM WEEKLY NEWS - The BATMAN E-mail Newsletter.

 

The full results of the 1999 ALFRED AWARDS are given below:

COMICS

* 1. FAVORITE ON-GOING TITLE

 

NIGHTWING (By Chuck Dixon & Scott McDaniel)

For the second year running NIGHTWING walked away with top honors as the Favorite On-Going title. This year with a runaway 44% of votes cast.

 

Runners up spot went to DETECTIVE COMICS with 16% of the votes cast.

BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES came in 3rd with 12%.

 

* 2. FAVORITE SINGLE ISSUE

 

 NIGHTWING #38 (Ballistic Romance Part 1 "Face To Face". By Chuck Dixon & Scott McDaniel)

Just sneaking in at the end of the year, with 25% of the votes, was the December issue of Nightwing featuring the long awaited emotional encounter between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon.

 

Tied in second place, each with 20%, came Batman Chronicles #18 and Legends Of The Dark Knight #120

 

Other stories nominated were: Batman #566, Birds Of Prey #8, Catwoman #75, Detective # 733, Robin #65, Shadow Of The Bat #86 and World's Finest #2      .

 

* 3. FAVORITE STORY-ARC

 

NO LAW & A NEW ORDER (By Bob Gale & Alex Maleev - Batman: No Man's Land #1, Shadow Of The Bat #83, Detective #730, Batman #563)

The opening story arc from the No Man's Land saga was easily the most popular with 31% of the votes.

 

The Huntress / Scarcrow "Fear Of Faith" came in a strong second with 18%

Nightwing's "Escape To Blackgate"  scoring a close third with 13%.

 

* 4. FAVORITE MAXI/MINI-SERIES

 

BATMAN & SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST (By Karl Kesel & Dave Taylor)

The 10 issue mini-series that re-examined the relationship between the Dark Knight and The Man Of Steel was a clear favorite with 54% of the vote.

 

The Batman/Tarzan crossover was the only other limited-series title to get more than 1 vote with a resulting 12% of the vote.

 

* 5. FAVORITE ELSEWORLDS TALE

 BATMAN: BOOK OF THE DEAD (By Doug Moench & Barry Kitson)

This classic mixing of the Bat mythos with Egyptian gods and myth came out ahead with 50% of the votes.

 

"Catwoman: Guardian Of Gotham" came in second with 33% of the votes cast.

 

* 6. FAVORITE ONE-SHOT

BATMAN: HARLEY QUINN (By Paul Dini & Yvel Guichet)

Helped by Alex Ross stunning cover painting the first appearance of the Animated series post popular hench-girl in the official DC Universe beat of all comers with 37% of the votes cast.

 

Batman: No Man's Land #0, Batman: No Man's Land #1 and Batman: war On Crime all tied for second spot with 18%

 

* 7. FAVORITE COVER

BATMAN: HARLEY QUINN and BATMAN: NO MAN'S LAND #1 - SPECIAL EDITION ( both by Alex Ross)

The two NML specials with cover paintings by the talented Alex Ross tied for top spot with 16% of the vote.

 

There was a three way tie for the second spot between Batman: War On Crime, Batman: No Man's Land #0 and Birds Of Prey #8 each with 8% of the vote.

* 8. FAVORITE WRITER

CHUCK DIXON

For the second year in succession regular Nightwing and Robin writer Chuck Dixon topped the poll with 37% of the votes cast.

 

Thriller novelist and NML's "find" Greg Rucka came in a close second with 30%

 

Other nominated writers included:

Paul Dini, Bob Gale, Devin Greyson, Karl Kesel, Jeph Loeb and Ty Templeton.

 

* 9. FAVORITE ARTIST

SCOTT McDANIEL

As with last year, Nightwing artist Scott McDaniel heads the list of favorite artist with 27% of the votes.

 

Birds Of prey artist Greg Land came in a close second with 20%

 

Other artists nominated included:

Jim Balent, Rich Burchett, Sergio Cariello, Mike Deodate, Dale Eaglesham, Staz Johnson, Graham Nolan, Alex Maleev, Tim Sale, Phil Winsdale and Ty Templeton.

 

* 10. FAVORITE INKER

KARL STORY

Another second year winner from the Nightwing team with 36% of the vote.

 

Terry Beatty came in second with 20% of the vote and

Drew Geraci was third with 18%

 

Other nominated inkers were:

Marlo Alquiza, "Batt", Scott Beatty, John Floyd, James Hodgkins, Sean Parsons and Aaron Sowd.

 

* 11. FAVORITE LETTERER

JOHN COSTANZA

A clean second year sweep for the Nightwing team as letterer John Costanza came out ahead with 53% of the vote.

 

The rest of the votes were spread equally among the other nominees;

Albert De Guzman, Ellie DeVille, Tim Harkins and Willie Schubert 

 

* 12. FAVORITE COLORIST

ROBERTA TEWES

To complete the team Nightwing colorist Roberta Tewes renditions of Bludhaven moved her to the top of the favorite Colorist category with 50% of the votes cast.

 

Last year's winner Gloria Vasquez and Pamela Rambo both came in with 23% of the votes. The Digital Chameleon team completed the nominations.

 

* 13. FAVORITE COVER ARTIST

ALEX ROSS

No surprise here as cover artist supremo Alex Ross topped this category with 30% of the votes.

 

Scott McDaniel came in second with 20% while last year's winner Brian Stelfreeze came in a close third with 12 %

 

Other nominated artists included:

Jim Balent, Brian Bolland, Damaggio, Greg Land, Geln Orbik, Jason Pearson, Tim Sale and Bill Siencwicz  

 

* 14. FAVORITE EDITOR

JORDAN GORFINKEL

The architect of No Man's Land came out top on the closest fought category of this years awards with 35% of the votes.

 

Darren Vincenzo came in second with 30%

and Bat-office supremo Denny O'Neil scored 26%

* 15. FAVORITE USE OF BATMAN OUTSIDE COMICS IN 1999

BATMAN BEYOND TV SHOW

Unsurprisingly, the excellent new version of Batman came out as the best non-comics use of Batman over the past year with 46% of the votes cast for Terry McGinnis and the future Gotham.

 

The New Batman Adventures still scored a strong second place with 33%.

The rest of the votes went to the Batman Beyond CD soundtrack.

 

* 16. FAVORITE NEW ANIMATED EPISODE IN 1999

MAD LOVE (The New Batman Adventures)

Confirming her popularity the excellent adaptation of Harley Quinn's origin scored highest honors among the new animated episodes with 38% of the votes cast.

 

The two Batman Beyond episodes "Dead Man's Hand" and "Rebirth" tied for second each with 19%

 

* 17. FAVORITE BATMAN RELATED ACTION FIGURE OF 1999

INSECT BODY MR. FREEZE (New Batman Adventures)

We all knew as soon as he appeared on screen that the post "Sub-Zero" version of Mr. Freeze would make a terrific toy. And he proved it by coming out a-head with 45% of the votes.

 

* 18. FAVORITE BATMAN TOY OF 1999

HARLEY QUINN DOLL (Hasbro On-Line "exclusive")

Initially offered only through the Hasbro collectors club and then through specialist stores this terrific doll of Harley and her pet Heyenas came out top with 40% of the votes.

 

* 19. FAVORITE BATMAN COLLECTIBLE OF 1999

BATMAN BEYOND MAQUETTE (Warner Brothers store)

My personal favorite and probably the nicest piece that was added to my collection over the last 12 months. This excellent dynamically posed maquette, topped the poll with 24% of the votes.

 

The various Batman "beanies" and the recent Batman snow-globe tied for second place with 18% of the vote.

 

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

* 20. FAVORITE CHARACTER OF 1999

NIGHTWING

The wing-nuts once again dominated The Alfred Awards with Dick Grayson beating out his mentor for the second year running with 36% of the votes.

 

Batman came in second with 18% and

Barbara Gordon a respectable third with 11%

 

And a special vote of thanks to everyone who voted.
