Don't Forget Your Past

You want to forget the past,
All the pain it gave you.
Now held over your head,
How can you be sure forgetting would save you?

For every tear you cried,
You’d forget a smile.
One thing you can’t disregard
Is that the present becomes past after awhile.

The things that you said
You may very well regret.
But those lessons learned,
You very well can’t forget.

Lying in bed at night,
You can’t bear to close your eyes.
The bad things won’t go away.
Can’t deceive yourself if you try.

Anything you’d give
Just to move on.
But who would you be
If your conscience was always on the run?

The past may be unbearable,
And everything bleak may seem,
But if it never happened,
Who exactly would you be?
