Charlene Wong

Charlene began skating at the age of 3 in her hometown Montreal, Canada. Three years later she was competing at the provincial level and by the age of ten at the national level in novice. In 1980, she was named to the Canadian Team and represented Canada in the Junior World Championships. In the years that followed she was invited to represent her country in over 20 senior international competitions including four World Championships and the Calgary Olympics. Her success as a competitive skater led to the naming of the "Charlene Wong Arena", in her honor in the province of Quebec in 1992.

Attracted to more than just the performance side of ice skating Charlene was active on the judging scene as well. In her seven years of judging , Charlene rose to become a qualified judge at the Gold figure and free test level as well as at the junior level in pairs and competitive singles skating.

Faced with obstacles that often challenge high performance athletes, Charlene explored many techniques to help enhance her skating ablility. This exploration led to her association with leading sports psychologists Dr. Terry Orlick and Dr. Peter Jensen. The success of their work together resulted in Charlene's becoming a regular speaker nationwide on a variety of topics that affect young athletes. Her audiences included The Candian Olympic Coaches Association, The Canadian Psychiatric Awareness Foundation and The Canadian National Wrestlers' Association to name a few.

After a full amateur career Charlene made her professional debut with a win at the1990 US Open Professional Figure Skating Championships. Later that year she finished second to Katarina Witt at the Miko Masters Pro Competitions in Paris France ahead of Oympic Medallists Debi Thomas, Elizabeth Manley,Rosalind Sumners and Caryn Kadavy. Following her success in Paris Charlene moved to Los Angeles to be with now former husband Scott Williams. Together they toured extensively internationally with many companies including Champions On Ice and Torvill & Dean's Face the Music World Tour.

When not on the road touring Charlene has always enjoyed coaching. During her lengthly career as an amateur she had the priveledge of working with the elite coaches in the sport of Ice Skating. Some of her former trainers include Barbara Roles , Kathy Casey, Sonya and Peter Dunfield , Helen Shields and Tom Litz, not to mention top choreographers including Cindy Stewart, Toller Cranston, Sandra Bezic, Sara Kawahara , Robin Cousins and Randy Gardner. Being fortunate to have studied with such experts Charlene applies what she has learned to her own teaching. Charlene is often asked to act as a "trouble shooter" for both amateur and professional skaters with special needs or requiring guidance in directing their careers. Along with coaching at the Health South Training Camp in El Segundo with Frank Carrol, Charlene has given seminars in the US, Europe,and Canada. She is regularly invited to guest coach at high performance training facilities such as the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and with the French National Team in both Orcieres and Courcheval France.

In 1996 Charlene and Scott created Turtle Island Productions. They produced both Professional Ice Shows as well as The American Open Professional Ice Skating Champioships. She also played an integral part in founding the Professional Skater's Cooperative.

Presently Charlene is excited to be coaching a wide range of students of all ages and levels. Olympic alternate Amber Corwin, also a Hermosa Beach resident, is one of Charlene's top international competitors. In addition to this she is working hard on her latest project " The Charlene Wong "I"ce Skate Foundation", a non profit organisation geared at providing disadvantaged youths the opportunity to participate in ice skating at all levels.

Charlene continues to reside in Hermosa Beach. Her hobbies include vegetarian cooking, reading, and spending time with her dogs Dutchess, Lady Lucy and Betty. Recently she has been highlighted in the book THE VEGETARIAN SPORTS NUTRITION GUIDE by Lisa Dorfman.
