SEVENTH GENERATION on Glen's Father's side
No information has been found regarding Matthias Sr... Some research has indicated the husband of Mary and father of Catherine and Matthias might be named Frederick and possibly either name might be a middle name... Also, some research is indicating the Brown's were living in York Township, Upper Canada, after 1793... Land and Census records have been found and will be researched further.
For some time the Matthias brown buried next to Mary Brown in the Carlton Cemetery was believed to be her husband... However, it has since been agreed upon the grave must be that of her son as the headstone reads, "Matthias Brown, Died Sept. 14, 1857"... There is no other headstone in the vacinity that indicates the Senior Matthias Brown was buried in Carlton Cemetery... Records of other cemeteries in Orleans County do not list a Matthias Brown.
A confirmable date of Mary's birth is yet to be confirmed, however, census records indicate she was born in England and her age in 1850 was 84... Her grave lies alongside that of her son, Matthias, in Carlton Cemetery [Sec 2,Row 8,Lot 4](21) Her headstone reads, "Mary Brown, wife of Matthias Brown, Died July 18, 1852, ---- 8{?} yrs-14 dys", the age cannot be positively read as "81" or "86"...(139) However, two records exist that indicate the age should be read as "86"... Available Cemetery records (142) indicate birth was on 4 July 1866 [an obvious typo error and may have been corrected by now]... If this date is corrected to 1766, it would conform to the age at time of death as "86yrs-14dys"... [age at time of death subtracted from 18 July 1852 equals a birth date of 4 July 1766]... 1850 Census for Orleans County shows Mary's age as 84, further substantiating a birth date of 4 July 1766 and death date at age "86".
Children of Matthias and Mary Brown were:

Matthias BROWN(104)
Matthias was born on 25 May 1785 in Pennsylvania and died 14 September 1857 in Carlton, Orleans County, New York... He was buried in Carlton Cemetery next to his mother Mary [Sec 2,Row 8,Lot 4].(21), and his headstone reads "Matthias Brown, Died Sept. 14, 1857"...[Matthias' headstone was broken in three pieces, each piece being unreadable and too heavy to lift... When researcher visited cemetery in 2002, an extra effort was made to lift the pieces... bottom half of stone remains buried and unable to dislodge; content of inscription below ground is unknown.] (139)
In 1812 Matthias purchased land in Niagara County on the
Mile Strip from the Holland Land Company [in 1805 the Mile Strip was divided into lots, named because it extended back from the river one mile from Lake Ontario to Tonawanda Creek]... From 1818 thru 1836, he purchased more land from the Holland Land Company... These are listed in the County Clerks Office in Volume T16R2, pg 65 & 66 (6 Jul 1818); pg 58 (20 Nov 1830); pg 46 (10 Apr 1834); pg 14 (30 Jan 1824)... Section 9, Township 16, Range 2 is centered in Kuckville... On 12 November 1856, the winter before his death, he sold Lot 6 & 8 of Section 9, T16R2 (Deed Bk 45, pg 517), to Almeron Wilson.(105)
Matthias is shown on the 1820 Federal Census living in Gaines, Genesee County, New York [Gaines is in the present day Township of Carlton and was one of the areas of Genesee county that became Orleans county for the 1830 Census], listed are 1 male 26-45 [could be a brother or cousin; Luther Brown was witness of Matthias will], and 1 male and 1 female 45+ [which fit Matthias and his mother Mary]... In 1830 the Carlton Census lists 1 male 10-15 (unknown) and 1 male 40-50 (Matthias) and 1 female 60-70 (Mary)... Carlton TWP census for 1840 lists 1 male 50-60 (Matthias) and 1 female 70-80 (Mary)... 1850 State and Federal census for Carlton, Orleans County, #66-68 & #68-70 (pg 5), lists Brown, Matthias (61), value of real estate $4,000, b. PA; Mary (84), b. Eng, no other individual is shown... 1855 State Census for Carlton indicates Matthias, age 69, had lived in the county 38 years [since 1817], also listed is siter Catherine, age 71, and nephews Almeron Wilson, age 26, and Alexander Wilson, age 24.
Matthias Will(6)[LDS MF#0592755, Bk 3, Pg 436/7] is dated 29 October 1852, 3 months after his mothers death [It is likely that Catherine came to live with her brother before her mothers death to care for her.. She and her nephews are shown living with Matthias at the time of the 1855 State Census].. The Will stipulates, "I give and bequeath to my sister Catherine Farnum widow (whose maiden name was Catherine Brown), all my real estate situated in the Town of Carlton___".. Also, "___to said sister Catherine Farnum whom I hereby appoint sole executrix of this my last Will and testatment hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.".. Witnesses of the Will were Mathew Dunham of Carton (who dies before Matthias), and Luther Brown of Carlton (believed to be related ..?).
