Pakistan,
officially Islamic Republic of Pakistan, republic in southern Asia, bounded on
the north and north west by Afghanistan, on the northeast by, on the east and
southeast by India, on the south by the Arabian Sea, and on the west by Iran.
The status of Jammu and Kashmir is a matter of dispute between India and
Pakistan. Until December 1971 Pakistan included the province of East Pakistan;
at that time, however, East Pakistan seceded from Pakistan and assumed the name.
The area of Pakistan is 796,095 sq km (307,374 sq mi), not including the section
of Jammu and Kashmir under its control. The capital of Pakistan is; the largest
city of the country is.

Pakistan
is mostly a dry region characterized by great extremes of elevation and
temperature. Its topography is partly divided by the, which enters the country
in the northeast and flows south into the Arabian Sea. The Indus forms in
general the line of demarcation between the two main landforms of the country,
namely, the Indus Valley, which extends principally along the eastern side of
the river, and the Baluchistan Highlands, which lie
to the west. Three lesser landforms of Pakistan are the coastal plain, which is
a narrow strip of land bordering the Arabian Sea; the Kharan Basin, which is
west of the Baluchistan Highlands; and the Thar Desert, which straddles the
border with India in the southeast. |
