A friend is a person who knows all about you but likes you anyway.
A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.
A friend is someone who knows you as you are,
Understands where you've been,
Accepts who you've become
And still gently invites you to grow
A friendship can weather most things and thrive in thin soil;
but it needs a little mulch of letters and phone calls and small, silly presents every so often -
just to save it from drying out completely.

An important element of a good friendship is mutual admiration,
which is another way of saying we should not take each other for granted.
