6. Emanuel Hickenbottom/Higginbotham, b. 1771 at Botetourt County, Virginia, d. 23 February 1861 at Berea, Madison County, Kentucky.
Emanuel Higginbotham was living, at Berea, with his daughter Sophia when he died.

Samuel Black's Will | Inventory | Sale | Land Warrant 1 |

Emanuel is listed on the 1796 Greenbrier County, Virginia Tax List and he is listed in 1810, 1850 and 1860 census for Garrard County, Kentucky.   Birth and death dates established from tombstone records for Garrard County, Kentucky.  The will of Samuel Black, step-brother to Emanuel, contains partial information on family composition for Moses Hickenbottom/Higginbotham of Greenbrier/Monroe County Virginia.  There are a total of five separate Samuel Higginbothams mentioned in the will!

Part of family composition based on a deed of partition for the estate of Emanual Higginbotham.  Twelve heirs are listed on the partition.  George and William were the defendants in a lawsuit brought by the heirs of Emanuel Higginbotham for the partition of lands. The above land warrant 1 shows the 200 acres borders the "Glasgow" property. George Higginbotham married a Jane Glasgow and the marriage of Joshua Davis and Isabinda Higginbotham took place at her brother's, George Higginbotham, home.

The estate sale for Emanuel Higginbotham contains the names of Joshua, Richard, and Wilson Davis.  The Nelly Davis mentioned in the sale is the wife of Enos Davis.

Below is a letter written for Emanuel Higginbotham to his son James Higginbotham:

May the 22nd 1857 Garrel [Garrard] Co. Ky.

Emanuel Higganbotham

Note: Emanuel Higginbotham could not read or write. It is possible that Sophia, his daughter, or her husband wrote the letter because by this time Emanuel was living with Sophia and her husband. James Higginbotham was living at Paris, Monroe County, Missouri when this letter was written. From: The Higginbotham Family Newsletter, 1977.

From the article, "The Higginbotham Legacy" : "One hundred and eighty-four years ago (1979), a buckskin-clad, long rifle totin' Scotsman named [Emanuel] Higginbotham, wandered up White Lick Creek with his family and camped there for the night." The spot where they slept that night in 1795, was to become their home, and the home of their descendants for many generations to come. This wilderness homestead, located today in the Eastern part of Garrard County, near Cartersville, was known as the William Higginbotham farm...the original 663 acre Higginbotham farm has dwindled to around 80 acres."

One of the more curious occurrences is the middle name "Boon" which appears in the Higginbotham line. My maternal gr-gr-grandmother Nancy Boon Davis mother was Isabinda Higginbotham. George Higginbotham, Isabinda's brother, also gave one of his daughters, Amanda, the Boon middle name.

Spouse: 6. Elisa/Elisabeth Reed, b. 1775, d.1850 at Garrard County Kentucky
Some marriage records give her name as Elizabeth.  I believe her name was Elizabeth.  Emanual's brother Oglesbury also is listed as marrying an Elizabeth Reed.  There is also a record that shows Olgesbury marrying an Elizabeth Price (see family group sheet for Moses Higginbotham below).

7. Moses Higginbotham/Hickenbottom, b.ca. 1736 at Virginia, d. 29 November 1804 at Monroe County, Virginia

Will |

Moses settled near Gap Mills in then Augusta County, Virginia around 1763.  The deeds of Moses Higginbotham in Greenbrier County were made to Capt. Reuben Harrison, of Rockingham County, Virginia, and to Robert Wiley, the latter in 1796.   The lands of Moses Higginbotham were sold by the Sheriff of Monroe County in 1815 for delinquent taxes for the years 1809, 1810, and 1812.  Moses Higginbotham's name appears in Public Claims records for "supplies given and services rendered for carrying on the [Revolutionary] War" for Greenbrier County Virginia (WV).  The will of Samuel Black, step-brother to Emanuel, contains partial information on family composition for Moses Hickenbottom/Higginbotham of Greenbrier/Monroe County Virginia.  There are a total of five separate Samuel Higginbothams mentioned in the will!

Moses owned nearly 4,000 acres in Greenbrier County, Virginia.

I have seen the Higginbotham name for this line spelled Hickenbottom on earlier records for Moses and his children. The Mathews County line's last name is usually spelled Higginbotham. The reason I bring this up is that there is a record of a Joseph Hickenbottom signing a deed in Chester County, Pennsylvania in the early 1710s as a witness for Caleb Baker, an ancestor on my paternal side. Since Joseph appears fairly commonly in our Higginbotham line, further investigation may reveal that this Joseph is the father of Thomas Higginbotham, father of Moses. I am wondering if any other Higginbotham researchers know more regarding this Joseph Hickenbottom?

9. Joseph Hickenbottham, d.ca. 1742 at Albemarle County, Virginia

A Joseph HIGGINBOTHAM, cordwainer, appears in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in the years 1720-1722. He would eventually move to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and then down the Shenandoah Valley to Albemarle County, Virginia. This follows the common pattern of migration to the central part of Virginia. Most settlers in Lancaster County, PA moved because of continued harassment by the Native Americans.

I have a hard time believing that the Higginbothams originated from Barbados. My doubts stem from the fact that Barbados was one of the wealthiest colonial possessions in the West Indies and there would be no incentive for the Higginbothams to leave for the backwoods of Pennsylvania.
