The city name of Coalinga was shortened from Coaling Station A, and is one of the few surviving California cities that got its start as a mining town. Located in Fresno County practically in the middle of the state, it is the gateway to Pinnacles National Monument. My wife Karen was born in this city and we decided to come here on our second anniversary. Now that we learned that the Iron Zoo is no longer being maintained, we are especially glad to have visited and had the opportunity to photograph these rigs.
