The world of the island has nine moons, each the giver of different magical powers. The powers you are able to control depend entirely on the moons you were born under. The most powerful mages in each element were born under full moons, sometimes under more than one full moon at one time. Even if you are born under a full, or nearly full moon, you must study your power for long years before you reach a level of true mastery. There are several exceptions to this general rule: only guardians, who must also have at least one guardian parent, can be born under the guardian moon. There are several other exceptions, that I will outline below.

Moon Areillo:

Moon of the Guardian, giving powers to see beyond to communicate with spirits of the other realms; as well as some foresight.

*Only guardians can be born under this moon, and they are extremely rare. Only one is born each generation, and, as guardians are also immortal unless killed in battle or by sickness, there are not very many generations.

Moon Cassunéi:

Moon of Fire, giving power over the element of fire, and the ability to communicate to the blessings of that realm, as well as the ability to quell the power of fire.

*Not terribly rare, but up there. This gift is only moderately powerful, since its gifts are, for the most part, only destructive.

Moon Awanai:

Moon of Water, giving the gifts of the ability to control the element of fire, as well as the weather, communicating with the beings and beasts of its realm, and calling water from even the driest places.
*Fairly common, but also fairly powerful, considering the life saving qualities it brings.

Moon Auorei:

Moon of the Air, giving the power to levitate one's self as well as objects, depending on the strength of the gift, as well as communicating over long distances, and communication with the beasts and spirits of this realm. Farsight and Foresight are also occasionally given by this moon. Memory is also controlled by this moon, and can sometimes be either augmented or forcibly diminished by it.

*Rare, but a passive gift, not generally agressive, unless you want to pick your enemy up and chuck him really far!

Moon Luminei:

Moon of the Light, giving the power of enlightenment, of calling and dispelling light, of speaking to the stars, sun, and moons, of reading the stars, and, especially, communicating with luminous beings. Light shaping is also given, the ability to shape ordinary objects out of light. These objects are unbelievably valuable, since their light can never be diminished.

*Very rare, and very powerful. Luminous beings are difficult to control, but if you are friendly, they will help you, and hinder your enemies, a great deal.

Moon Sosturnei:

Moon of the Shadow, giving the same powers as the moon of the Light, only in reverse. A darker power, but still possible to use for good, although the shadow beings are even more dangerous than those of the light.

*As rare as that of the light, more difficult to control, many with this gift go mad, incapable of controlling this awesome power.

Moon Amalia:

Moon of the Animal, of living energy and living things. It gives the abillity to control and converse with the living things of the world, be they furred, scaled, or feathered. Occasionally, the ability to transform into one or more animals. Animal bonding is also given.

*Not very exclusive, but very powerful when born on the full of the moon.

Moon Emaie:

Moon of the Earth, giving the power to shape plants and earth, to make them grow into any shape, and to communicate with the beings and creatures of this plane.

*Average rarity, powerful, since it is such a constructive and life-giving power. Those possessing it often have very gentle, quiet natures, given to solitude, and a love of their forests. They feel what their trees do, and are very sensitive to changes in nature.

Moon Elié:

Moon of healing and counter healing. The strange thing about this moon is that when it is full, it gives the gift of healing, of body, mind or spirit. When it is half full, it gives the opposite gift, of anti healing, and black sending.

*Very rare, and a very powerful gift, as many go too far in their healing, and destroy themselves along with the sicknesses they combat.

Sending is always given, except in very extreme cases, as is the ability to bond with the unicorns. These days, all the powers are magnified, by the proximity of the forest and the unicorns. There are some magicks which require the traditional "spell components" and "spells" themselves, especially with the Guardians, who use ancient magics, nearly forgotten by the rest of the race. Occasionally, but not often, a power will randomly spring up, without the recipient being born under it's moon. This is unexplained, as of yet, although one possible answer is that the bearer had the power in a previous life.

A quarter moon is not very powerful, and would allow the bearer only minimal controll over the element. Half is somewhat more, and is considered average. Three quarter is very powerful, and fairly rare. Such elves typically devote several years to perfecting their understanding of their powers. A full moon results in an amazingly powerful entity, who must devote sometimes centuries to the studying their powers, lest they get out of control and consume the bearer. With the more powerful magics, they sometimes do not appear for several centuries, although they may appear sooner. It is entirely random.

The one in charge of discovering a cub's powers is the tribe's astronomer, who reads the skies. Such a person usually has at least a small gift of light, although it is not necessary.
