I am a Jew

The words stumbled on his lip
He hesitated
He stuttered.
The words stumbled on his lips
He had never said them before
It was almost like a "dirty" word
Like the obscene word
The Nazi's wanted to make it,
And did make it!
For those who wanted to believe it,
For those who let the believing
Seep into their souls
and for those who knew nothing else to believe,
And he was a bit of all three.

Hating being Jewish
He found justification in all the slanders
And even those that stung too deeply
Left their bit of poison there
And having no memory
Nor learning
Nor feeling
He had nothing to place in place of slander.

Bereft
Having forsaken
His own historic riches.
Forsaken by his own
Lack of identification!.
