Arab Girl

I saw her standing there on the campus
Just standing there.
A statue - standing there.
I, too, was standing there on the campus
Standing there
Looking at her
Standing there,
Her face
Enfolded
enframed
enclosed
in white
A "Song of Songs face!
Lo, thou art beautiful,
Thou art altogether beautiful -
But is there no blemish in thee?
Oh, let me see thy true countenance"
Standing there on the campus

Art thou
A panther?
A tiger?
You statue
Standing there on the campus.
So beautiful.
Alone.

The statue moves
Goes
Unwanted
Unwelcome
To our dining rooms
To our library
To our classrooms
To sit in our chairs
To listen to our lecturers

To think her own thoughts
Alone.

A locked up garden?
A sealed up fountain?
A sword on the thigh
An expert in war?
A cause of terror in the night?
Oh, moving statue on the campus
What is thy true countenance?
