Letter from Herm Nov. 8 1974

Dear Grace,

After Munich I continued by train to Frankfurt where I stayed over Shabbat. On Thursday and Friday I worked in the Frankfurter Stadt archives in connection with the German historic background of my "Memoirs"1919 to 1923 (8 years old to 12). I was received by Dr. Andernacht, who immediately presented me with one of their new books on Goethe and who received 1 copy of my "Breuer Profile".
Sunday early I took the train to Hamburg and arrived here this afternoon. I am living here in a small pension, clean and simple in the heart of the University. The first three days I paid visits to the Israeli Consul, the head of the Jewish Community of 1500 people, 10% Persian and others. The Persians are rather traditional: On Shabbat they come to services with women and children by car but have kosher households.
Today I'll have my second meeting with the Max Planck Institute for the Comparative Law Encyclopedia. I met Dr. Zweigart and Dr. Drobnitz, the heads of the Institute and their specialist in Middle East laws. We discussed whether an inclusion of "Mishpat Ivri" was possible in an encyclopedia
of present actual law would be possible or should we only work with Prof. Viehweg who is working on the religious and social backgrounds of Korean, Islam and Hindu law.
Yesterday I spent the first day in the Hamburg port, which, of course, brought back many memories of my early training (1929 age 18) Next letter will tell you about my investigations in shipping. For that work I might (still very uncertain) go for a few days to Rotterdam. In any case, I'll be home by Dec. 11
Tomorrow, ("Beli Neder") I plan to go to shul, a 30 minute walk. The weather is cold but without rain or snow. I hold my fingers crossed for the future.
I hope you are all well. I'll write to Julie on receipt of his first letter. I hope to transfer money to him for the running of the office immediately upon hearing from Myron. Ask Julie if he can find in my files the "Business Diary" with the Hollander Plan 1948 and my letter to Nixon 1973.
Good Shabbos and good month
Love
Herm
