Grace Livingston Hill is well known as one of the most prolific writers of romantic fiction. Her personal life
was
fraught with joys and sorrows not unlike those experienced by many of her fictional heroines.
Born in Wellsville, New York, Grace nearly died during the first hours of life. But her loving parents and friends turned to God in prayer. She survived miraculously, thus her thankful father named her Grace.
Grace was always close to her father, a Presbyterian minister, and her mother, a published writer. It was from them that she learned the art of storytelling. When Grace was twelve, a close aunt (Isabella Alden) surprised her with a hardbound, illustrated copy of one of Grace's stories (which Grace wrote at age 10). This was the beginning of Grace's journey into being a published author.
In 1892 Grace married Frank Hill, a young minister, and they soon had two lovely young daughters, Margaret and Ruth. Then came 1899, a difficult year for Grace - the year when her husband died, and her father died a few months later in 1900. Suddenly Grace had to find a new place to live (her home was owned by the church where her husband had been pastor). It was a struggle for Grace to raise her young daughters alone, but through everything she kept writing. In 1902 she produced The Angel Of His Presence, The Story Of A Whim, and An Unwilling Guest. In 1903 her two books According To The Pattern and Because Of Stephen were published.
It wasn't long before Grace was a well-known author, but she wanted to go beyond just entertaining her readers. She soon included the message of God's salvation through Jesus Christ in each of her books. For Grace, the most important thing she did was not write books, but share the message of salvation, a message she felt God wanted her to share through the abilities he had given her.
In all, Grace Livingston Hill wrote more than one hundred books, all of which have sold thousands of copies and have touched the lives of readers around the world with their message of "enduring love" and the true way to lasting happiness: a relationship with God through his Son, Jesus Christ.
In an interview shortly before her death, Grace's devotion to her Lord still shone clear. She commented that whatever she had accomplished had been God's doing. She was only his servant, one who had tried to follow his teaching in all her thoughts and writing.
This is the basic biography included in many of Grace's books.
