Writing Guidelines

This is the Second Grade Writing Rubric, which is what I use when grading your child's writing assignments and prompts.

4 - Independent

Shows organization or sense of story (has clear beginning,
              middle, and end)
Connects related ideas smoothly
Expresses several ideas to add detail or elaboration
Shows originality in word choices
Uses more conventional than temporary spelling
Shows excitement, humor, suspense, dialogue, or other
             creative elements
Generally uses standard application of punctuation and
             capitalization
Uses literary language, formal language, and oral language
             patterns

3 - Early Independent

Uses sentences in a logical order
Uses varied sentence patterns
Shows evidence of detail and elaboration
Uses temporary spelling, if needed, to keep ideas flowing
Uses some elements of expressive and descriptive language
Uses correct capitalization and appropriate end punctuation
             most of the time
Uses more standard than temporary spelling

2 - Developing

May use short, patterned, or repetitive sentences
Relates sentence to topic
Uses some detail which may be presented in list-like form
Uses temporary spelling that can generally be read by others

1 - Emergent

May express ideas mainly through pictures or letter strings
May use some temporary spelling according to beginning sounds
             heard and letter names
Can focus on theme/topic
May write one or two bare ideas
