Reading Homework Help

Vocab List

The only Reading homework I usually assign is at the beginning of the week. On Monday and Tuesday, I would like for you to sit down with your childand read the week's story with him/her.  Unfortunately, I don't have enough supplemental books to send home with your child to do additional reading, and any time we use those books in school, there will be no reading homework.  Any nights where I don't assign a story to read, please read your child's library book with him/her.  Also, while you are reading with your child, ask him/her questions about what you're reading like:

Who is(are) the main character(s)?

What is the main idea?

What is the problem?  How was it solved?

What is the setting? Where does the story take place?

Did you think the story had a good ending?  If not, how could you have changed the ending to make it better?

Are there any words you didn't understand?  Be sure to explain those meanings to your child!

Ask your child why certain characters are feeling like they are (happy, sad, angry, jealous, etc.), and ask if they know any other words that mean the same thing (sad - miserable, unhappy, upset, etc.)

Did you like the story? Why or why not?
