Learning Expectations:
1. Describe the different ways in which animals move.
2. Record relevant observations and findings using written
language, drawings, and charts.
3. Communicate the procedures and results of investigations for
specific purposes using drawings and oral language.
4. Correctly spell words identified by the teacher.
5. Allow others to speak, and wait their turn in conversations or
class discussions.
6. Listen to and comment positively on the contributions of
others in group and class discussions.
Materials
1. Book: Bats by Gail Gibbons
2. Chart paper
3. Markers
4. Five large papers with the labels: hop, run, slide, swim, fly
5. Animal booklets (class set)
Whole Group Activity
Read the book, Bats by Gail Gibbons.
Ask children:
- How do bats move?
- Do all animals move this way?
- How do other animals move?
Create a word bank of the different ways in which animals move.
The children should respond: Some animals ____________. (Have
them respond in this manner so that they do not give examples of
animals in their responses as they will do that in the small
group activity).
- e.g., hop, run, slide, swim, fly /p>
Small Group Activity
The students will work in groups of 4 or 5. Give each group a
large paper with the following labels: hop, run, swim, fly, slide.
Have each group choose a recorder and a reporter. The students
will make of list of animals for each category.
Whole Group Activity
Gather again as a whole group. Have ready the chart paper with
the labels, hop, run, swim, fly, slide. Create a chart of the
different ways in which animals move from the lists created by
the groups. The reporter will respond for each group.
Individual Student Activity
Give each student an animal booklet with the following pages:
Animals that hop.
Animals that fly
Animals that swim
Animals that run.
Animals that slide.
The student will draw and label three animals for each page.
Evaluation
Observe the students during whole group and individual activities:
Did the student listen attentively to the story?
Did the student participate in creating the word bank?
Did the student listen while others were speaking?
Did the student draw and print neatly and colour the pictures?
