Vowels

To help the students use the short vowel sounds correctly in their reading and writing, I display these pictures* on the wall.

We chant the following:

(The words in red are spoken by the teacher as she/he points to the corresponding item on the card. The words in blue are chanted by the students.)

This is the letter a. It makes the sound "a" as in apple.

This is the letter e. It makes the sound "e" as in elephant.

This is the letter i. It makes the sound "i" as in insect.

This is the letter o. It makes the sound "o" as in octopus.

This is the letter u. It makes the sound "u" as in umbrella.

The children use the vowel display often as they write in their journals.

* These pictures were found in phonics books and then enlarged and coloured for the display. The upper and lower case letters are shown above each picture and the word (e.g., apple) is shown below each picture. I used the largest font available in Microsoft Publisher for the text which I then cut and pasted onto each vowel card. The cards were then laminated.
