Writing Rubric - Grade One

Writing Level 1 (Pre-writer)

This is the first stage of developmental writing.
Students at this stage are able to do the following:

• generate ideas from experience
• orally dictate ideas
• draw picture appropriate for ideas
• may use letter-like symbols randomly in an attempt to print

Writing Level 2 (Emerging Writer)

Students at this stage are able to do the following:

• copy environmental print
• label pictures with some knowledge of correct sound/symbol relationships
• participate in class-patterned writing activities
• represent most consonant sounds with temporary spelling
• begin to write some high frequency sight words
• combine sounds into words
• may write unrelated phrase/sentences

Writing Level 3 (Developing Writer)

Students at this stage are able to do the following:

• begin to use vowels in temporary spelling
• use sight words in writing
• write a phrase/sentence to communicate an idea
• random attempt at punctuation
• write multiple phrase/sentences about a given topic
• can read own writing back

Writing Level 4 (Simple Story)

Students at this level are beginning to write related sentences that however briefly, tell a story. Students at this level demonstrate the following:

• sense of beginning, middle, end
• begin to understand that writing can be revised

Writing Level 5 (Independent Writer)

Students at this level can do the following:

• mix temporary spelling with conventional
• use end punctuation and capitalization appropriately
• write several related sentences to a topic
• use greater detail
• begin to edit
