Q. 1. Sentence Fragments

I am a business writer, and use these knowingly (and sparingly) for emphasis. I was recently criticized by someone who takes the view that fragments have no place in business writing.

2. Starting Sentences with "And"

I received the same criticism for this (to my accuser) egregious usage. I have a host of references that my accuser will probably regard as anecdotal. Would you be kind enough to give me an authoritative comment on these issues please -- as they relate to business writing.

A. I taught business writing for many years and always told my students to write in a natural language. Far better to sound like a human being than an ever so perfect machine.

You can find something to back up your occasional use of fragments in Lapsing Into A Comma by Bill Walsh (Contemporary Books). Constance Hale in Sin and Syntax (Broadway Books) says it's okay to start a sentence with a conjunction, and so do I.
