capitalization

Names of specific things are capitalized. This includes names and titles that refer to people. Titles are not capitalized when they do not refer to specific individuals.

People's names and titles

Sergeant Holmes went to Professor Matthews' assistance.

The sergeant helped the professor.

Names of specific places

She came from Mount Washington down the Saco River to Biddeford, Maine.

They couldn't decide whether to go to the mountains or to the lake for their vacation.

Names of inhabitants of specific places

Frenchman, Southerner, New Englander, Ohioan

Days of the week, holidays, and months

Monday, Tuesday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, March, June

Names of specific businesses, institutions, organizations, religious denominations

Both the Democratic Party and the Congregational Church had harsh criticism for the Mandible Corporation.

He went to church every week.
