Q. What are conditional/subordinate phrases and how do you use them?

A. When a subordinate clause* beginning with "if" or "unless," expresses a condition, the subordinate clause is called a conditional clause.

If I had some money, I would buy you lunch.
If I were you, I would not do that.

*You asked about phrases, but I think you meant clauses. Clauses have a subject and verb; phrases do not.
