Q. We are addressing Christmas cards and have a question. We like to address cards to the Smith family as such--The Smiths--Do we need an apostrophe anywhere--Are we in essence saying The Smith's abode and need an apostrophe?

A. You don't need an apostrophe here because you are addressing the card to the members of the Smith family (plural Smiths). Although the card is going to their house, it is not actually intended for the house but for the people who live in the house.
