Q. Eric Zorn wrote in the Trib today: "If it were just you and I talking over coffee..." Shouldn't it be: "you and me..."

A. "You and I" is correct in this sentence. Pronouns coming after the verb "to be" are predicate nouminatives, not direct objects. Predicate nominatives need to be in the nominative case (case of the subject), "I" rather than "me."
