The Grammar Doctor

Q. I have a question about the use of commas in a series. My kids are being taught that commas should separate the words or group of words in a series. However, I was taught that a comma belonged only between the group of words that were not connected by "and". For example, "He was surrounded by sycophants, liars and thieves."

PA. The comma before "and" in a series is optional as long as one is consistent within a particular message.
