sneaked or snuck?

Is it sneaked or snuck? The American Heritage Dictionary calls "snuck" informal, but Merriam-Webster merely lists it as the past or past participle of "sneak."

Since there is some disagreement over the correct form, it is better to use the more acceptable form in situations where correctness is important. Two thirds of the American Heritage Dictionary's usage panel disapproved of "snuck.'"
