The Grammar Doctor

Q. I hope you will be kind enough to help with a grammar question that has perplexed me for years (and one that no one can answer!)
Which sentence is correct, please, and why?
"He had one patient who presented with IOP higher than"
"He has one patient that presented with IOP higher than..."

A. Use "who" in referring to an individual person. Use "that" in referring to a class or group. The Gregg Reference Manual gives these examples:

She is the only one of my managers who can speak Japanese fluently. (refers to an individual)
He is the kind of student that should take advanced math. (refers to a class of students)
