Q. I always get mixed up in using " than" and " then". How can I tell them apart?

A. " Than" is used in comparisons:
She was smarter than I was.
You car costs more than mine.

" Then" refers to time:
I realized then [at that time] what a terrible mistake I had made.
If you give me a hundred dollars, then [at the time that you give me the money] I will promise not to tell on you.
