Q. It is my understanding that Web is always capitalized when one is referring to the World Wide Web. We're having a friendly argument here. Some folks capitalize it for Web site but do not cap for more general usage such as web technology.

A. World Wide Web is always capitalized, as is its shortened form the Web. However, when web is used as an adjective, it is not capitalized: web site, web technology, web server, web design, web page, etc.

My dictionary (1997 edition) doesn't even list World Wide Web. However, I checked in two books on web site design. They both handled the capitalization of Web/web the way I described it above.
